Ran into this and its interesting. Recruit rankings can be subjective but overall in the ballpark. But coaching matters too and to me this list says coaching mattered:

Here are just the examples since 2003. Average class rank over 4 years prior to Natty.

2003 LSU 12th
2004 USC 8th
2005 UT 8th
2006 UF 5th
2007 LSU 8th
2008 UF 5th
2009 Bama 8th
2010 Aub 16th
2013 Florida St 6th
2014 Ohio St 4th
2016 Clemson 13th
2018 Clemson 13th

That is interesting.

I think if you looked at LSU's recruiting results in the 2-3 years after those first 2 Nattys, you would also see how much coaching can hinder a talented squad.
