5* TE Arik Gilbert and Marietta HS beat a good Rome team 48-14.

Gilbert’s Line
9 receptions
205yds
2 TDs

6’5”, 250lb Transformer - straight freak

Probably Bama leads. Vols have a shot. Not sure where UGA stands right now as they seem to be better situated with Darnell Washington.

Great athlete and great player. But he seems to have an aversion to blocking, thinks he's a WR instead of a TE, and doesn't want to share the spotlight with another top TE if he were to come to UGA. Perhaps I'm way off base, but that just doesn't seem like a team player to me.

And UGA wants to take two TEs. Highly doubtful Gilbert ends up as one of them; we seem to already have Darnell Washington and Theo Johnson locked down.

Gilbert will probably pick between Clem, Tenn, and Bama.

Are you sure?

Arik and his mom plan to attend Bama's opener vs Duke in Atlanta and the Crimson Tide vs Vols game at The Capstone.

Georgia had a 5-star talent at TE the last 3 years and pissed it away.

You are extremely off base.

What other elite TE talent does Georgia have on the roster that would keep Gilbert from attending UGA?

Don't knock the kid because he realized your staff doesn't know how to use a Jumbo WR/TE. It makes you look petty.

Washington gonna break a lot of hearts when he stays on the West Coast.

He could be a dang solid WR if teams use him the way TEs are used in the NFL nowadays.

2019 #50 2nd round draft pick Irv $MMith Jr.

(Irv Smith, Jr. was a 3-star recruit)

Yeah, because I implied he didn't want to come to UGA right?

Wait a tick...no. No I actually didn't. Reading is your friend.

Did you happen to watch the game tonight? Did you notice the multiple times while he was lined up at WR (pretty much all he played) where he was using his 250+ pound frame to block a CB that led to a huge gain for the RB? Yeah, me neither. Because instead, he chose to try and run the CB out of the area and let his RB get tackled, rather than just burying the much smaller player.

Much like Saban at Bama, UGA requires their TE's to be team players and actually participate as a blocker. Gilbert doesn't seem to want to be that guy, which is why I'll be a little surprised if he ends up at Bama. Pruitt is telling him what he wants to hear in that he can play full time WR at Tenner. And Clemson doesn't really make TE's block.

But interestingly with Tenn is that they now have our former OC, as you so eloquently pointed out UGA didn't use the TE very much the last 3 years. So no wonder Pruitt is telling Gilbert he can play WR

And who or what talent does UGA have at TE to keep Gilbert from attending? As I said, UGA is taking 2 TE's this cycle, obviously because we are losing two seniors. There are 3 elite talents at TE this cycle: Gilbert, Theo Johnson, and Darnell Washington. We've already secured our 2 in Washington and Johnson. So the bus is full.

I'm not knocking Gilbert, opened up by saying he's a great player and a great athlete. And I wouldn't blame him for not wanting to come participate in a run heavy offense when he wants to catch passess. It's why I didn't blame Haselwood for leaving last year. But it shouldn't be a crime pointing out accurate criticisms that he has an aversion to blocking and doesn't seem to want to play his natural TE position instead of WR.

And thank you, I do look pretty.

My pet peeve with my own fan base is someone will say something about a recruit, then it will be repeated on messageboards over and over - and then it becomes accepted as gospel.

YES, Gilbert seems to prefer to play more of a slotted out TE/Jumbo WR - that doesn’t make him a diva, it doesn’t make him me-first not a prima dona.

Whoever gets Arik Gilbert is getting a helluva player - when he interviews I hear respect and yessir and no sir. As to blocking, I guarandamntee you Saban will make his azz block if he plays for Bama.

Well, one of us is definitely going to be disappointed.

See you in December then?

And fwiw, I have zero issue with him wanting to do this. He could be an absolute stud at it. I’m not sure if he could do what he does in HS being split out side, but he’s also so talented that he could get away with it.

I hope we have those guys, but it’s such an arrogant look when neither of them are committed

You're right it doesn't make him either of those things. It just makes him not a good fit for what we want to do on offense, nothing more. Heck, you know as well as I do we've got talented WR's that can't get on the field until they buy into being a willing blocker.

Whoever gets Arik is going to get a heck of a player, I just find it disappointing he doesn't seem to grasp (yet) that he would be best served being a traditional TE. At least if he wants to make it to the NFL, which he has the talent for.

My bet is he gets with a coach that eventually convinces him to buy in to the dirty work and realizes his full potential.

He could very well be the Jimmy Graham type who lines up as a WR on 75% of snaps.

Possible, but find it a little unlikely with that 4.73 forty. Graham was a combine verified 4.53. But Gilbert is as good of a route runner as you'll find at this stage of their development. I'd envision him more of a late-career Tony Gonzalez who had lost his deep speed but was still decently quick, and extremely crafty in knowing how to get open and use body position to shield defenders. But even Tony G knew he had to block when it called for it.

Just saying it looks like the NFL is starting to put TEs out wide far more often than they used to and I don’t see that stopping any time soon.

I do agree that Gilbert could be an unreal tight end, but I could also see him being a very solid hybrid that is used more out of the slot in mismatch situations. Granted, LBs and safeties are so dang good now it’s not as much of a mismatch as they used to be, but the kid has loads of skill wherever he plays.
