This isn’t that hard. If you believe the ref correctly ruled forward progress dead, then you’re good with the result. If you are like me, and think he ruled forward progress stopped prematurely, it should have been a touchdown. And then we would be debating if the ref should have thrown a penalty for the pulling. But as a poster has pointed out, at least Tennessee would then have had the option of kicking a field goal if penalized for pulling (still seems utterly absurd you can push a teammate but can’t pull him).

The correctly determined as to forward progress part is far from clear, but I do recognize it’s a legit argument.

I agree completely. For the record, there was a play earlier in this game where a pass receiver's forward progress was stopped for a far longer period of time, yet he broke loose and that big ole' white boy ran it all the way down the sideline for a TD.

You conveniently stop the gif before forward progress has stopped.

Here is where the forward progress has stopped. See the difference?

I stopped the gif at the point the ball stopping moving forward and began moving backwards. What happens after that is irrelevant, which is likely why Tennessee wasn’t flagged for assisting the runner.

You have a bizarre definition of "forward". In the last picture, the ball is clearly "forward" of any point in your gif, thus "forward progress" was not stopped. The picture tells the story.

Guess we will never seen a "2nd effort" play ever made again in the game of football.

Where does the madness end?!?

We should do away with dead balls all together. Just an absolute free for all. The Wild West!

You people are animals!

The play had already ended by that point. Sorry.

You serious? By that logic, any offense could just commit a penalty to get another down.

The play is called down when a foul occurs. The defense declines the penalty.

It’s like some of you guys have never watched football.

That's not how that works. If you decline the penalty it's a touchdown. They would've been forced to accept it. Just because a guy pulls him doesn't mean it always results in a good play for the offense forcing the defense to accept the penalty. Same as a hold on the offense...

I could be misunderstanding what you're replying to since the quote wasn't included.

Yes. According to Tuscaloosa, a considerable amount of Brian Robinson's yardage this season is illegitimate. I can't count the number of times I saw him stopped cold, only to break loose and keep going.

Which would’ve been a replay of the down and another opportunity for Tennessee to get in correct?

Nope.

The problem is that forward progress was stopped before the assisting the runner penalty. So it would not have been a touchdown, they would have called the assisting the runner penalty, declined because of forward progress stopped before breaking the plane, and end game.

He didn't have his own player pulling on him.

Progress is dead the moment that happens.

Wrong. It is not a TD if you decline. The ball is placed at the spot of the foul even if you decline.

The only thing that is declined is the 5 yards, NOT where the ball is placed. The extra yard is not given no matter what is chosen.
