Most Julep recipes are bastards and changed and adjusted by idiots. This is how I make mine and it was as old of a recipe I could find.
Take 3-4 bunches of mint and bruise it in the bottom of the metal cup. Bruise it all around the sides of the glass. Dont crush or muddle it.
Some remove the mint, I dont. I like mint a lot.
Then take a linen bag or something and crush some ice with a hammer. Fill the glass and round the top. Then put about 2-3 oz poured slowly over the ice.
You should have some simple syrup made and I honestly shoot for about 50/50 ratio liquid wise with the bourbon
Do not stir. It will mix itself. Garnish with a mint bunch and there is your julep. About an inch into the glass, you will taste heaven.
Anyways, my daily bourbon is
Eagle Rare
Rowans Creek
but
my preferred is George T Stagg or Pappy 20yr.

Though it's not bourbon:
That with some Old Crow and Rebel Yell will make a man out of you.

I used to sneak R&R into football games back when I was a freshman and soph.

A mint julep is a waste of perfectly good bourbon.

Which is why I asked what brands people prefer. I'm not going to use some great single barrel to make a batch or mix other drinks with. Everyday stuff like Makers is fine for that.
I do prefer drinking bourbon straight most of the time but a nice cocktail every now and then is good for a change.

I am a pretty big drinker. Drink all kinds of beers. I hate bourbon. I can stomach it with sprite, but that's it. I just don't get it. I almost think that a lot of people just think that they like bourbon. It's like they force themselves into liking it cuz it's just the cool thing to do around here.

Woodford reserve/buffalo trace/makers
Depending on what I'm mixing with. Woodford, on ice.

Bourbon mixed with anything tastes terrible to me. Way too syrupy. Bourbon on the rocks is much easier to stomach. Even the shitty stuff.

I just don't get it. I don't understand why people don't like canadien or scotch other stuff better. It's like hey, let's drink the one with the strongest bite that goes down the least smoothly.

I've never had Scotch, and the only Canadian whiskey I've had was some bottom shelf stuff in Canada. I've had Jameson and Bushmill, though.

If you try to order a bourbon in Lexington mixed with something the bartender looks at you like you just fricked his daughter. If I mix, its not at a bar and never with sprite

As someone who lived in Lex for 6 years, you couldn't be more wrong.

Well the OP asked about bourbon, but I'm a crown fan as well. I just like whiskey.
