The problem is the targeting rule isn't just to stop someone who is intentionally trying to hurt someone. It's to try and stop hits altogether that can cause head injury.
The rule is to protect the hitter as much as the guy being hit... See Chuckie Mullins.
It's purpose is to try and make players tackle in a safer way for both players.
IMO it should be called on offensive players that lower their head into the defensive guys as well if you are gonna call it.

He's pretty spot on, but I don't agree with this. Maybe you can say that about someone reviewing it after the fact, but the ref who made the call didn't decide in a split second when he made the call, "hey, here is a great chance to frick LSU in 2 weeks against Bama"

We get players ejected for targeting in every game. May not be the best support for the REC is out to get you narrative.

Yep. Just like when your player clothesline another player after the play is over, you let LSU handle the discipline internally.

Doesn't change the fact that punches are an immediately ejection and the refs just...didn't. Boutte was ejected from the game, too

I hope they reform the targeting rule this offseason, I think everyone does. I'm not sure anybody likes it.
