With all this talk about QB play, neither QB in championship game is great

The kid from Foley on ND couldn’t sniff a SEC scholarship. I don’t think Auburn or bama even offered him a grey shirt.

He's from Fairhope. Big difference from Foley.
Covid hit and prevented him from being able to be evaluated at summer camps. Auburn tried to get him last off season.

Sorry I always get Foley and Fairhope confused and we used to play them both. Foley had the F on the helmets and Fairhope has the pirate ship

Riley is a great athlete - genuinely. He was a very good basketball player in high school and had D1 offers. You can't teach 6'4", 220 lbs. and mobility and physicality like he has.
Alabama recruits the QB position nationally now - 4 of the last 6 Alabama starting QBs have been from California (Young was from California, Milroe from Texas, Buchner from California, Jones from Florida, Tua from California, Hurts from Texas, Barnett from California).
Auburn less so (probably says something about the stature of the program to be honest) but still relatively nationally: Thorne was from Illinois, Ashford from Alabama, Finley from Louisiana, Nix from Alabama, Stidham from Kentucky, White from Florida, Johnson from Alabama, and Marshall from Georgia.
Long gone are the days where the local kid gets a nod over the nationally great kid in college football.

I feel the opposite is true. they are the reasons these teams are going to the champtionship game.

Fairhope is the one with the coach that can never get past the first round of the state playoffs...even when he had Riley Leonard.
I thought Riley was a good QB in HS, but he was the best HS basketball player I've ever watched in person...granted, I'm not traveling around the nation watching hs basketball, but he was really good.
