From the Tulsa world newspaper on WM's departure...

Why did you leave out other parts of the article???

quote:

The 48-year-old Martinez didn’t deserve to become the first to fall under Stoops’ axe. Not by a long stretch.
quote:

I interviewed two new Sooners this weekend, a pair of defensive players, who told me they might not have chosen OU if it weren’t for Martinez.
quote:

It’s also a given that when Bob Stoops’ defense is struggling and his defensive guru brother is looking for a job, somebody’s got to go. Just the way it is.
quote:

For my part, I always enjoyed an opportunity to interview Martinez. A seriously strong handshake, a powerful, even booming voice, a laser gaze with a touch of compassion. And when I talked to him, I always left knowing more about defensive back techniques than I ever thought I could.
quote:

The coaches I spoke to are sad to see him go. Although I will protect their identities, I can say they gave him an all-encompassing endorsement. “We’re gonna miss Willie,” one coach said. “He’s a great guy. A really great guy. A good family man, too. That’s important, now. I mean, he’s a hard worker, a good football coach, a great recruiter, a great guy to have around. A really nice man. And listen, the guy knows his stuff. “But he’ll be all right. He’ll land somewhere and he’ll do great, just like he did here.”

Pretty straight forward post.

I was not aware that being defensive and circling the wagons caused one to lose their ability to read...

I just heard a great radio spot while driving west through north Alabama.

From what I hear the Coxey metropolitan area is the place to buy meth over that way.

+1

I didn't know anything about the guy, but those are some pretty strong words in his favor.

Sounds like some butthurt uga fans on this one (except for the one fan).

All people have to do is look at our defense from 01-04 to see how well they work together. Simple as that.

People who think it's awful are simply recalling his stint as a DC and thinking that's what they're getting, but that is simply not accurate

My brother that went to UGA concurs....I knew it was a good hire when he emailed me and said frick Auburn/Nick Fairley is a dirty, cheating bastard.

I think people here are confused.

BVG was a good defensive coordinator IN SPITE OF Willie Martinez.

That was more of a "excited to be mentioned" dance.

BVG must disagree because he rehired Martinez at AU.

If our secondary was constantly getting abused I would agree, but they didn't. We had awesome secondaries when they were both on staff. I dont' know why this is so difficult, WM as DC = garbage, WM and BVG working together = solid.

Also, do you have a link to the quote in your sig? Because that doesn't sound right. Branden Smith said all summer that he would switch to #3 or 4 if the coaches wanted him to. Them both wearing 1 was not an issue whatsoever..our coaches just didn't feel it was necessary.

Thanks for coming to the rescue.

So, you're saying Willie sucks balls without BVG?

or

BVG feels sorry for poor ole Willie, but his awsomeness will cover for his poor crippled freind?

Anyone that says it is a shitty hire is prolly jelly.

I don't know any more about them than has been posted here .
It sounds like an especially good hire when you think of them as working together before at UGA.

This worked out well for auburn and with a more deliberate offense they should show vast improvement on defense almost immediately.
