We're never going to win another game. Probation. National Title vacated. Etc.

Chizik isn't a DB guru regardless of what a lot of our fans claim. He came up as a LB coach. His title was DC/DB coach at Auburn when Carlos Rogers won the Thorpe but he just coached the safeties in practice while Lolley coached the cb's. A few of our fans also like to try to give him credit for the next 2 Thorpe winners when he was coaching at Texas but Duane Akina was the DB coach there.

Barners, get ready to hear the most common excuse out of Willard's mouth after his "bend but don't break" secondary gets torched again ...

"Bottom line ... we've got to make plays in space?"

I'm not reading through 7 pages of this thread but I will say that this is a pretty good hire IMO. People are so hung up on WM as Georgia's DC, where he was flat out terrible. No two ways about it, he was in over his head as a DC and was AWFUL at it. However, look at our secondaries from 01-04 when, not only as he our DB coach, but BVG was our DC too. They were excellent. I understand he didn't perform as well at OU, but again, I think the BVG element plays a big factor here. Those 2 have coached together before UGA, put out some outstanding defenses (and secondaries) while at UGA, and now are together again at AU.

People can laugh and make fun all they want at WM as a DC, but he was a great DB coach for us plain and simple. This is another good hire for AU, IMO.

I couldn't find any stats for 2001 or 2002 seasons but under CBVG and CWM in 03 and 04 UGA had a top 20 pass defense both years.

From the Tulsa world newspaper on WM's departure...

quote:

Willie Martinez hit the road. Bob Stoops was careful to call it a resignation. Said Martinez would pursue other opportunities.

But semantics aside, Martinez is the first assistant coach Bob Stoops has fired in his 13 seasons steering the Sooners’ immense and frequently unwieldy vessel.

Selective memories imo. More STATS.

• The 2007 Georgia defense finished first in the SEC and
eighth nationally in sacks (42) and 14 nationally in total
defense.

• His 2006 defense ranked eighth nationally in total
defense, fifth in pass defense and first in the SEC in third
down efficiency.

• Under Martinez, the 2005 Georgia defense was eighth in the country in scoring defense (16.4 ppg) and seventh in pass defense.

• On a staff that led the 2003 SEC Eastern Division
champion Georgia defense that finished second nationally
in scoring defense (14.5 ppg), fourth in total defense
(276.86 ypg), sixth in passing defense (174.50 ypg, first
in the SEC), 14th nationally in turnover margin (+.79) and fourth in number of scoreless quarters (25) among the AP's final top-10 teams.

• The 2002 Georgia defense finished first in the SEC and
fourth nationally in scoring defense (15.1 ppg), first in the
SEC in red zone defense (58.8%), second in the SEC in
rushing defense (114.0 ypg) and allowed only 31 second
half points in the final seven games of the season.

the tulsa article is way more positive, aside from the statement you pulled out...

Martinez will be an asset in recruiting, and should work out well with VanGorder on the field.

solid, not great, hire IMO.

Dawg fans think this is the dumbest move since the Vikings traded Herschel Walker to the Cowboys.

I just heard a great radio spot while driving west through north Alabama. I didn't catch his name, but he said something about hoke on Twitter. Anyway, the guy pumped so much sunshine I almost screamed out "War Eagle". He said that AU fans should rejoice, as the "defensive mastermind" Chizik is taking care of the D, and for AU fans to expect to hear Willie named as DB coach. Guy heaped praise on Martinez. It was awesome, and the guy had a bro voice not heard anywhere outside Oahu.

You can't really count 05,06, or 07. He was pulling double duty as DBC and DC. That's a totally different situation that only coaching DBs. If you want to talk about "his defense" after he took over, you should cite that from 01-04 our defense gave up 30+ points ONE time (34 points to the national champs, and that was only due to a pick 6), while under WM from 05-09 we gave up 30 points 16 times, 40 points 7 times, and 50 points once. I don't care what you choose to look at, those were horrible defenses.

However, like I've stated before, BVG and WM working in tandem together like they did at UGA (and will again at AU) produced wonderful results.

I don't. Anyone with some common sense and reason can see that this is a good hire considering all of the information (him working under BVG). People who think it's awful are simply recalling his stint as a DC and thinking that's what they're getting, but that is simply not accurate.
