He took over a playoff team, Kelly took over a team that went .500 in consecutive seasons.
He should perform better...

Year 2: Did not make SEC Championship (but won the ReliaQuest Bowl)

That's mostly because they beat Bama and lost to their best East opponent in Year 1 and did the opposite in Year 2.
Better record in Year 2 and finished higher in the polls.
