Off the top of my head, here are sports that dont require winning your conference/division in order to win the championship:
NFL
NBA

You have to win the conference championship in MLB, NFL NBA to go to the championship.
no.
teams that "won" wildcard won MLB, NFL.
Lots of teams that did not win their division won NBA.
Bill Russell's Celtics beat Wilts' division winning Phila Warriors. It happens. Celtics had injuries during the regular season. Healthy celts beat Warriors, led by Russell's incredible rebounding and shot blocking.
One year Houston got into NBA playoffs with bare .500 record and the premier center in the league and won the championship.

1. He wasn't making an argument. He was simply explaining how the SEC could have 3 teams in the BCS.
2. All of the mentioned sports/leagues have a playoff system, apples to oranges.
3. NCAA Baseball and basketball are completely different. Don't group them together with the pros.
4. NFL, NBC, and MLB you win your league which is on the same level as winning the conference in NCAA football.
