If only our defense could have been better...

LINK

This is just our passing vs one of the best defenses in the country that year.

I don't think it was our talent. It was our lack of depth that hurts vs the SEC. Also coaching, which directly relates to making the best of what you have. Look at what June Jones has done at SMU and Hawaii before that. Good coaches do well no matter what.

Agreed. In a few years we will have recruited enough depth to be ok. If games were only two quarters long we would be ok right now.

I feel like people are underestimating the speed this team has seen. Unless I am mistaken the last two NFL defensive rookies of the year weren't from SEC schools.

C-Mike, Trey Williams, Brandon Williams are better than anything LSU has in it's running back stables, and definitely faster than your entire team.

As far as WR speed? Swope. Nuf said.

I doubt it. There are no fast people in Texas.

I know in general we aren't that fast, but our athletes are hands down a step or two faster than Louisiana athletes. I'm pretty sure that has been well established.

A&M has very good speed, just not enough size and speed combined in the same package. The primary issue for Texas athletes isn't lack of speed but that Texas HS's have moved to Spread offenses the last few years and many of the best athletes want to play offense. In SEC states the emphasis is on defense.

Lol. No it isn't. That is such Skip Bayless-esque retoric. Some sweeping generality that uses one aspect to generalize a complex issue. Von Miller's size and speed combination was better than anything in the SEC over the last 5 years. Anything. In the past decade, tu has sent countless DBs to the NFL than any school in the SEC. The primary emphasis on offense may be a small and marginal factor, but if a guy is naturally built like a defensive tackle but wants to play receiver he ain't going to play receiver at a high school in Texas. That doesn't make sense. On any level.

The SEC's passion, resources, primarily what they pay for coaches and facilities has far more to do with their success than Texas high schools playing the spread. Or whatever point you're trying to make.

There will always be individuals like Miller that break the mold. Still in general in SEC states at the HS level the best athletes play defense while in Texas the best athletes play offense. Are there exceptions? Of course, and many of them. Still, the backbone of the SEC is the fact they have so many great defensive players with a combination of size and speed. The DT/WR comparison is just stupid. The better example is a kid that could play LB or DB that instead plays QB/RB/WR. Kids in Texas tend to want to play offense.

I also agree it isn't that big of a factor in the end. An athlete is still an athlete and coaching and facilities trump whatever a kid did in HS. Probably the greatest LB in Aggie history before Miller was Johnny Holland and he was a HS QB. Jackie Sherrill and RC Slocum just made him into a 2 Time All American LB.

They style of play will be an adjustment for A&M but not as much as it would have been a couple of years ago. The SEC likes physical games where a team winning 17-3 can feel like a blowout. The Big 12 played a much faster paced and wide open style where it was rare teams didn't score 30 points. I really think the last 3 years playing Arkansas and the 2010 Cotton Bowl with LSU already were the "eye openers" for A&M. They know what they will be up against.

Personally I think the offense at A&M is as good as any in the SEC. Huge offensive line. Tons of talent at RB. Elite level WR and good depth behind him. The first team defense is also very good. The real issue is defensive depth. If A&M can get lucky they can hide that with minimal injuries and the offense keeping the D off the field. If a few of the wrong guys go down though A&M is going to be trying to win every game in a shootout and that is a recipe for disaster in the SEC. A&M has a lot better talent than many give them credit for, they were favored in 12 of 13 games last year and playing Top 25 teams week after week. The question is how they deal with all of the changes.
