Apparently, prior to 1992...you don't.

I would love to see the argument you post to prove the SEC was a powerhouse conference in any sport before that time. Bama having a shitload of titles doesn't mean the whole conference was dominant either that would be like saying the SWC was a powerhouse because they had Texas.
How often do you see track discussions around here? What drives the machine, Mr. 9 Posts?

UT, AU, UGA all three were amazing football programs during the 80s. Bama during the 60s & 70s with Ole Miss in the 60s as well. So, the SEC has always had different teams winning. It just gets overlooked by bamas run during the 60/70s.
ETA:
Forgot about LSU and AU during the 50s

Simply compare series records of SEC teams vs SWC teams. From '50 thru '91 how many SWC teams won AP/UPI titles? Now,compare that with the SEC.Check bowl appearances and wins.

This has to be about basketball or baseball.
Silly SECRant, there is no such thing as a College Football National Championship.

Later in the 1970's, the Big 8 rumblings came about again, but this time with the SEC talking, too. Since it wasn't until 1987 that the 12-team conference championship rule passed, the SEC had no reason to look to expand. I suspect, however, that an eager Arkansas, coming off a bit of a revitalization under Lou Holtz, would have been welcomed; maybe I'm wrong.
When the CCG rule passed in 1987, the SEC, of course, immediately started thinking about expansion. Florida State by then was the most logical choice. They were independent, and by then they were beginning to finish in the top 5 every year. Miami was thought of as well, but not too seriously. South Carolina, an independent, had been slightly better than mediocre for the 1980's; they would be a sure thing if asked. Other southern independents that must have been mentioned in a meeting at least once: Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Louisville. Still, South Carolina and Florida State seemed to be the best two choices there.
Florida State expressed no interest in joining, and at the same time, Arkansas got on the phone with the SEC and said that they'd had it with the SWC. The decision was made on a golf course in Birmingham according to most Arkansas old-timers I talk to about it.
So yeah, Arkansas owes Bobby Bowden a basket of fruit at least. Had the SEC taken South Carolina and Florida State, Arkansas likely would have petitioned to join the Big 8 in 1992, and I'm sure they would have been welcomed in. Then three years later, Arkansas likely would be right back in a conference with Texas, A&M, and Baylor. It's an interesting bizarro-world about which to think.

I don't know who contacted whom but I do remember the rumors. I believe it was seriously considered but I'm glad it didn't work out.
