That's some irony considering Bama has won the NC twice recently without winning their conference championship game. 2011, 2017.

Why can Georgia lose and still get in the playoffs - but we can't ?

Might as well just title every thread you open that way. At least it would be honest.

1977 is a good example of why a playoff was needed. To be fair they should have split the titles with the likes of Bama, Arkansas, Notre Dame and Texas. It is why a playoff was long overdue to put these mythical titles away for good.
