Why did Brown foul the UVA kid with 1.5s at half court?

Yes, the guy (Jerome?) double dribbled off his foot but why foul at half court, even though you have a foul to give? No way was that kid going to hit a shot with 1.5 seconds left at half court. I thought the first foul to give was a good foul but the 2nd was horrible.

Once you foul them, UVA could setup an out of bounds play. Which set them up for the win.

Tough, tough loss.

That’s what I was wondering. He only had a chance of a desperation shot

He was clearly told to do so by Bruce Pearl.

I also didn't understand why UVA was able to move the ball up and take it out basically on the side of their court? Shouldn't the ball have been inbounded closer to half court? Talk about perfect storm.

He was planning on fouling anyway. The double dribble took more time off. He likely wasn’t paying attention to the clock.

The ended up with a desperation shot anyway. And the refs continued to their retarded calls.

Because he crossed midcourt before the foul.

I'm sure Pearl told them they had 2 fouls to give, which is probably why he did it but after the first one, he should have told them not to foul unless they dumped it into the paint somehow?? Man, that's a kick in the nuts.

Bruce ate his lunch for not fouling quick enough in the New Mexico State game.

Comes back to bite him

If you watch the play closely, it is clear that Brown was going to foul Jerome in the backcourt. Those were Pearl's instructions, which were strategically sound. It would have left UVA with a backcourt inbounds play and ~ 2-3 seconds to hit the winning shot. Very low chance of success there.

The double dribble actually threw Brown off. Jermome picked up the ball and was crossing midcourt when Brown finally fouled him. That led to an easier inbounds play where UVA could catch-and-shoot for the game winner. Their chances of success went up a great deal.

Here's a gif of the play on Twitter. Brown was going in for the foul BEFORE the double dribble.

He barely crossed midcourt too. But shouldn't the ball would be taken out of bounds near the half court? How do they get the ball on the sideline parallel to the top of key? Much easier making that sideline pass from that close?

Shouldn't the ball have been taken out of bounds close to midcourt? They moved the ball forward 15 - 20 feet.

No, it goes to the front court throw-in line, which is about 28-feet from the basket.

You can't control the officials. You can control making crazy decisions like Pearl did to tell his guys to keep fouling, seemingly no matter what. Pearl has to realize that this is 5 seconds left in a Final 4 with very young players. You take a really risky strategy like that instead of just letting the game play out and bad things can happen, like that idiotic intentional foul.

Huh? Why? I've watched basketball for decades. The ball is inbounded from the sidelines next to the half court line. Many times the offense will inbound the ball into their back court in case they can't get it in the front court. No way could they have passed into the back court inbounding the ball at the top of the key.

Time out advanced the ball

Maybe that's it. I don't know NCAA rules but I didn't think their was any advancement of the ball in NCAA.

The crazy thing is Brown nearly fouled him while he was shooting. If he had put up the ball slightly sooner, he is getting 3 FT's off an INTENTIONAL foul. Yea, I agree the kick ball double dribble threw his timing off, but that is exactly why you don't get too cute with intentional fouls with a 2 point lead. It's a lot harder to pull off in real time.

Yep, and he was grabbing the jersey which could have easily been 3 shots if the kid would have launched the ball. I just don't understand why he would foul, especially after the ball was lost and time came off the clock. He panicked.

I still would love to know how they were able to advance the ball after that foul???
