Speaking as someone who used to cover the Vols regularly before my current gig, the fan base has taken a sharp turn since the Citrus Bowl in 2001. Vols had a lot of promise the next two years, then the Fulmer nose dive began with those two Chicken Bowl losses.
Kiffin revived the fan base unlike anything I had ever seen, then crushed it to a new low. I can't look at VolNation or Hubbs' site anymore because it is embarrassing. I remember when Volquest and these sites first started, it was good, civil, smart posting. The Vol fan base now is 30 percent the real, civil, smart fan and 70 percent the dumb reds who have come upon the Internet in the last 6-7 years and just want to b**h about everything and anything and it has created a divisive apathy all around.
I read this site and post here some because I enjoy the SEC and college football and the discussion is good and ribbing is in good fun most of the time. The Vols fans who do post here, with the exception of the two or three obvious trolls, are smart fans and remind me of the guys I would gauge on boards to test my column material.
A lot of us writers used to post on these places or read the sites to test whether or not something negative or positive we'd write would be well received. Now the culture has changed so much, you can't test a darn thing. I hope Tennessee finds success again if anything for my dad who is a die hard and took me to games when I was little. It was hard for him to understand when I started writing that I couldn't be a fan anymore and had to be unbiased. Then there's the one side of me that dreads it because the 70 percent, I'd say 35 percent of who never have attended a game in Neyland and complain when nobody shows up, will become unbearable.
Just my two cents worth.
