Depth isn't that big of a deal this year with the new clock rules.

I don't know who I'd take in the vs., but I guarantee that they will all be exhausted and worn out after the game.

I take LSU OL and DL vs Bama's. But that's not part of the game that worries me.

I feel the biggest issue is depth. By the time they play, both teams will have lots of nicks and bumps. Who knows who will be injured by the time the game rolls around. I think LSU def. has more depth, so I'll give the nod to LSU. If both teams were 100%. I'd say Bama's O-line>LSU D-line and LSU O-line>Bama D-line.

Depth is a bigger issue. There are only about 4 fewer plays per team per game. Less time means less rest. Intensity is increased

trio apparently doesn't understand this. the length of the game is decreased but it is mostly rest time. the amount of plays run per game hasn't significantly decreased. faulty reasoning like that is what landed him at ULL

We play Arky State, you play Tulane.
Damn i hope these powerhouses don't beat us up to bad or both teams will be worn out before we play each other.

This battle between behemoths may be the crux of the season. Honestly, I can't get a feel on who will come out on top - preseason, I was pretty confident LSU would, but now... It's going to be one helluva game in BR 11/7! KC.
I'd rather watch the game on 11/8. But let me know how the one on 11/7 turns out will ya?

All I know is I like our chances with T. Cody taking on 2 blockers every play.
Most nose tackles take up two blockers on every play. That is why there are 5 olinemen and only 4 dlinemen. Jesus
As for Cody, he has never faced Herm Johnson.
Posted on 10/2/08 at 11:58 am to TxTiger82
Hey Trio, do you not realize Big Herm is about 20 #'s heavier + 5" taller than Cody?
Cody will be a force but having one of the best o-lines in the country will help that cause

I don't think our players are selling that stuff. That's a Bama thing.

Trio,
this is the first post I have seen on here where you are not just outright flaming. Congradulations! Keep up the good work.
Now if we can just reign in our resident LSU flamer, BoogerLee, we may all just be able to get along.

Line play is my special little obsession. I have recorded every LSU game over the last 20 years or so and always rewatch them "coach style" in the week following the game. That is I watch each play several times watching a different lineman every time to "grade" him so to speak.
This method of watching the lines allows you to see the different schemes and methods that the "O" and "D" lines use to attack and defeat opponents.
TXtiger made a good point about "most nose guards" taking up two blockers in the blocking schemes most commonly used by college lines...LSU being no different. The only time Cody will likely be man to man on anyone is during a pass play...and pass rushing is not his forte.
I bring up Cody specifically because to me he is the only real difference in the two teams lines from last year to this year. The reason LSU has dominated Alabama the last five years is because our LINES have been dominant.
Saban's recruiting efforts have allowed the Tide to begin to catch up but in my opinion they still have a ways to go. Depth is a huge factor at every position but particularly in the line. Its great to have during the games, but depth plays an even greater factor over the course of a season since injuries are inevitable.
LSU starts 3 seniors and 1 junior on the D line. 2 seniors 2 juniors and 1 immensely talented sophmore on the offensive line. These players have successfully dominated Alabama's lines over the past few years and two years of Saban's recruits isn't enough to change that...yet.

One other quick note about the Bama's defensive line. Saban prefers to play a 4 man front on his defenses...as he did his entire time at LSU. The reason he is playing the 3-4 alignment is because enough quality D-lineman to be successful in a 4 man front. As soon as his recruiting efforts stocks the line to his liking he will return to playing a 4 man front. As a Bama fan, once you see the tide's defense lining up in a 4-3, you will know that Saban feels his line can stack up with the SEC's best...but not until then.

This is just totally wrong. Did you watch the game last year. Glenn Dorsey is one huge difference. Alabama had 2 starting O-line players suspended last year. Cody as you mentioned is a huge difference but Bama is missing their best DL from last year in Gilberry.
So on defense: Bama has Cody in the middle and Deadrick taking the place of Gilberry. 2 out of 3 players are different and our Jack LB is different.
On defense for LSU: Dorsey is gone.
On offense: Bama was missing 2 starting OL in last years game.
I'm not saying Bama will win the battle... but it is a much different matchup this year.

The problem here is that as fans of our respective teams we are much more intimate knowledge of the teams we follow than the ones we play. You watch every single game that bama plays during the year, then watch LSU when you play us and catch bits and pieces here and there of some of their other games. This is the same thing I do, just reversing the teams.
This generally results in you having just a general knowledge of LSU personnel and me a general knowledge of Bama's personnel. You remember Dorsey because he was a standout player and well publicized and assume that there will be a great falloff in talent now that he is gone.
You don't know for instance that our FOURTH best defensive tackle (Al Woods) is ranked in the top ten defensive tackles for THIS years pro draft... and he has had trouble getting playing time because of the logjam of talented players in front of him. This is indicative of the current level of talent at LSU at almost every position.
You are right, I only have a general idea of Bama's talent level this year, but I have seen Bama's talent...on the lines and elsewhere...deployed against LSU's talent the last 5 years and to my eyes the talent gap was much wider than only two good recruiting classes can catch up to.
Does this mean LSU will beat Alabama this year? Nope. College football is a very unpredictable game and every weekend brings us a lesser talented team beating a team with far greater overall talent....thats why we love watching the games so much...if the more talented team won every time there wouldn't be much point in watching the games.
I will close with my favorite quote penned by the immortal Grantland Rice many years ago but still relevant today..."The race goes not always to the swift nor victory to the strong, but thats the way to BET!" I'm betting on LSU!

Trio get familiar with seeing Charles Scott running dive left. Cody will be worn down. By the way Herman Johnson is bigger than Mount Cody so I guess that means Mount Cody might just be a hill that LSU will run all over.
