Clemson has been historically better. It is what it is. USC is the state school, but a school named after a city has out shined them.

No, not everything is about y'all. Louisiana us actually the anomaly in that y'all didn't have a University of Louisiana until ULL rebranded itself.
Louisiana and New Jersey are the only two states without a big state school named "University of 'State Name'".
Ohio is the only state where the "University of 'State Name'" is smaller and less well known than "'State Name" State University.

In football only, Clemson >USCe but I'm talking about overall.
There are exceptions to every rule.
USCe and Clemson are fairly even in my mind as far as overall sports programs and how they are perceived nationally.

Football success = / = state school, surely you can't be this naive. Clemson is a medium sized public school lodged in the corner of a small-medium-sized state. They aren't an athletic juggernaut and aren't academically recognized as the Ivys and Stanfords of the world. They aren't that well known outside of the South / college football fans.
