Herman was the clear #1 choice. Hell Texas was literally days from letting LSU snag him a getting the AD building burned to the ground.
Don't lose your mind as I'm not saying he was ever interested, but Hicks and his crew were ready to throw $10M a year on a long term guaranteed deal to pull Saban back when $5M per was considered special.
You can drop a few names, but what you may have forgotten or never knew is that Texas initially wavered on Herman over character issues. Our shite show ADept and admin thought they were the cats meow and Darrell Royal was their hiring standard.
Many other good targets were scratched by default.
I wish I was barely drinking age.
Herman was an up and coming coach. But like I said, he wasn't proven. He had 1 year at Houston and was a hype name. Just like Sark right now, although as I said, he at least has HC experience, although he has 7 wins on average.
For a school that claims they can buy whatever they want, it's not that kind of hire. You let those other schools try them out, and then if they have success you pay for them.
A&M went out and paid a high price for a coach that gave a team it's first national championships in 14 years and has them in the top10. Don't know that he'll bring them a national championship, but it shows they are are more serious than Texas.

Herman was the hot name, the interim AD was bullied by his fellow Houston alumni into that hire. There was no coaching search when Herman was hired because he was the chosen one by the Houston alumni. There is a guy currently at Florida who appears to have been the better coach of those two who was available at the time.

The Ut & aTm PUF/endowments have always been managed a few blocks away from Ut in Austin, and Utimco, University of Texas Investment Management Company, was recently renamed adding aTm for political reasons
There are several other funds managed there for Ut, with total assets around $65 Billion, of that, around $13-14 Billion is aTm's System's portion of the PUF/Endowment, the rest, around $51-52 Billion, are Ut funds including their portion of the PUF/Endowment, around $32 Billion for the Ut System

This thread is bordering on PoliBoard-level data warping.
You can make the numbers say almost anything you want to.
Endowment? Texas gets a bigger share of the PUF (from days when A&M was a much smaller school). They both have big “systems” of schools under them in other parts of the state they have to share with. They both have huge donor endowments that may or may not in the numbers that get quoted.
Athletics? Do you include money raised for facilities? Do you measure “revenue”, or “profit”?
The most laughable part, though, is how much LSU posters piss and moan about A&M talking about money, then spend so much time talking about A&M’s money.
