State needs to win a SEC title to make it to the big 6. At this point Tennessee would be on the outside looking in if this happens.

Yeah, I was trying to find this article but couldn't find it. I think it's from 1989 and it specifically uses the words "Big Six".

It's not the only reason but it makes a ton of sense that all the members of the Big Six are paired off as cross division games:
Bama vs. Tennessee
Auburn vs. Georgia
LSU vs. Florida
Symmetry and balance. Ying and Yang.
Well, at least until 10erC started sucking something awful.
I'm in favor of adding a 9th conference game and going back to 2 permanent cross divisions.
