number of Tennesseans who Volunteered to fight in the War of 1812
Nope Prof, didn't forget anything. My GGGfather who crossed the Cumberland Gap into Tennessee in 1805 volunteered and served 3 years with the 26th Tennessee Infantry during 1812 War, mostly up along the Niagara River in New York... was awarded 80 acres in Illinois as a result.
But in his memoires he noted that he volunteered just to get the heck out of Tennessee, a horrible and disgusting place full of inbred, cove dwellers and moonshining ridge runners. When he emigrated to S. Illinois he said he had never seen a cart with wheels until his regiment arrived in N.Y., nor people with all their teeth who took baths occasionally.
Nothing much has changed...

PS: Volunteering is not limited to Tennessee. He also signed up for militia during Black Hawk Rebellion, and again during the Mexican War. His son was in 7th Illinois Infantry WBTS. My GFather lost eye in WWI. My father was KIA in Normandy 12 days after twin brother and I were born. We both served in US Special Forces in Vietnam, and he continued in other places for decades, even in Afghanistan a few years ago. My son is Naval Academy, USMC, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. So... how is it that Tennessee gets to claim credit for volunteerism?
