The span I was speaking of was before that.(Alabama 2000-2004) You guys were on the downhill side by 2007.
Still a better record with a 10 win season mixed in the fold. We were on sanctions...You guys have just eaten yourselves from the inside out. And the reason you have the biggest recruiting budget is because you have to travel farther than everyone else to recruit. Of course there are years where it is better, but overall and historically you can not count on instate talent to get you through in TN. Truth

OK? I'm a UT fan, don't you think I've noticed?
IYO is this the worst shape that the program has been in Tennessee's history?

Many people older than me would say mid-late 70's, but it's been bad lately. I think we are though the worst of it though.

You mean the span where we were on major probation as repeat violators and where we had 4 different coaches leading our program between 2000-2003? We had a reason for being down in the dumps. Tennessee has done this all by themselves.

You guys won 2 more games in that span. Its pretty much common knowledge that Tennessee has been trending towards more SEC level talent. As far as out of state talent, we will get players...always have always will.

We had also been crippled by major sanctions. There was a reason our program was down in the dumps other than incompetence, which is what has plagued Tennessee these last five years. As bad as we were from 2000-2004 we were still competitive in most of our games.

Exactly! We are not arguing how we got here we are arguing that both situations were bad. I'm just saying that everyone that says UT football is done is a moron. Look at Bama, yall were in the dumps, and before long you were back on top.
I'm not saying we'll win 3 titles in 4 years, but we will be back in the conversation soon.

I'm not arguing that. I'm simply saying that we never got as low as your team has gotten these last five years. We sucked from 2000-2004, there's no doubt of that. But we were competitive in the vast majority of our losses during that span and managed a 10-win season in '02.

I think its pretty common knowledge that TN has never produced much SEC talent. One year does not change that IMO. The one part of the state that does decently is Memphis and you guys have had a hard time recruiting that area for years. And I was just trying to figure out why our situation was worse than what you are going through right now. It's really not a big deal, both were bad situations...We just have a bit more of a instate cushion to depend on

And I think coaches see that as well...The writing is on the wall...You guys had alot of advantages in the 90s that you simply don't have now

You're absolutely correct. The two situations aren't comparable at all. Alabama was bad because they were on probation and had to deal with severe scholarship limitations. There was also the Mike Price debacle which set the program back for years. Also, it's much easier to rebuild at Alabama because they have a lot more in-state talent. Saban was able to rebuild Bama back to prominence quickly due to the 2008 recruiting class. Julio Jones, Mark Barron, Robert Lester, Courtney Upshaw and Marcell Dareus were all 2008 recruits who came from the state of Alabama. That's three future NFL top 10 draft picks. When's the last time the state of Tennessee produced that much elite talent in a single year?

When was the true downfall of Tennessee football?
The day that Phil Fulmer decided to put cocaine and strippers in front of his family and team.

How was Bama in a worse situation that you guys are in right now? We were never $200 million in debt
you're wrong.
Alabama athletic department was over 207 million dollars in debt last year
dude you gotta spend money to make money. when you look at debts in the SEC, big time programs have the most debt and teams like Vandy, Kentucky, Mississippi schools has the least debt.

There is a joke in there somewhere but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Cool story Hansel. That stat has nothing to do with anything we are talking about. At least we were competitive. You guys haven't been within 4 TD's of us in years.

Really? Let's compare the 5 years of Alabama football before Saban's arrival with the last 5 years of Tennessee football:
Alabama:
2002: 10-3
2003: 4-9
2004: 6-6
2005: 10-2
2006: 6-7
Alabama didn't just suck for 5 years before Saban. Dubose Dubosed the team since the 90's. it was a very long period of bottomless suckage (3,4 win seasons) and occasional mediocrity.
