What's the rant's opnion of Dan Mullen*?

He got Mississippi State to #1 in 2014 only to lose to Alabmama and GT.
Has he lost his opportunity to move up in the CFB world? Was his success all due to Dak Prescott?
He's proven to be a nice developer of QB and is a good playcaller but he's also had some decent defenses. He reminds me of a guy like Jim Mora Jr at UCLA.
ETA: Yes, I'm desperate for CFB enough to where I want to discuss Mullen*.

I lost a lot of respect for him when he wore those shorts against South Alabama and lost.

Best coach msu has had... and will ever get. Great spot for mullen also, no pressure, no stress, just keep doing what he is doing. He could stay there until he retires if he wants to. I think he has done as well as he can at msu.

good coach but not great. He will be a god in that state if he can win 7-8 per year and beat OM 2 of 3.

Ok coach. Perfect for State.
Quoting myself from the second best coach thread a few weeks ago:
He is a decent coach who is massively overrated by this board. Miss St fills their OOC slate with cupcakes (they have played two p5 teams in the regular season under him and lost them both), plus they get Kentucky every year.
2014 was undoubtedly his best team but he also got lucky that year that they caught LSU/Auburn/A&M early when they were all ranked way too high.
Having said all that, because of his longevity (and because he is doing it at freaking State), and because of coaching attrition at other schools, he deserves to be in the conversation for second best coach. But IMO that is more of a sad sign of how much the quality of coaching has dipped in the conference the past few years.

I think Mullen is a good coach who has just about plateaued at Miss State. He's way overdue to get a bigger job, or at least a job with higher potential.

not sure anyone with higher potential wants him otherwise he would have been gone years ago

Mullin is doing a good job with the resources he has and should completely dominate the black bears in state recruiting after the NCAA nukes Oxford.

Ask again in a few years after the new scheduling rules have been in place for a while.
He's done a good job coaching in some big games, but his OOC scheduling is embarrassing to the point that it should severely tarnish his reputation. I can understand for the first couple of years to help build some momentum with easy wins, but this far into his tenure is just cowardly and a blight on the entire conference. Even programs like South Alabama have enough self respect to schedule challenging OOC opponents.

Yeah pretty sure he tried to get the Miami and VA Tech jobs.
He is in a great spot though. He gets paid $4.2 million a year without any crazy expectations. Just go to a bowl and beat Ole Miss every few years

I think he may have hit his ceiling at Moo State.
Mississippi produces way more talent then its population would suggest... but with Ole Miss, MSU, and Southern Miss all dipping into that talent pool (with some poaching from out of state) it gets spread around too much.
If you did not have Southern Miss, a strong G5 team that will, even when it is down, land talent that would otherwise go to MSU or Ole Miss then yes... MSU or Ole Miss could win the SEC and possibly a national title. Which would be amazing.
Southern Miss is not going away though. They are just good enough to land talent that starves State and Ole Miss of the second tier players you have to have to plug in when injuries happen.
It would be like Alabama and Auburn if USA or Troy actually managed to suck away some real talent from the big two schools. Suddenly winning becomes a lot more difficult.

This kind of surprises me. I would think a struggling program like Maryland would have gone after him, although Durkin might end up being good there.

I think he is a good coach and miss st needs to hang on to this man

I think he also tried for the UF job several times. Tells you what the AD's think of him when UF would not hire a former OC during their glory years. Cost of living at MSU has got to be cheap so he has to be saving major bank.

He's making a top 10-15 salary, and just has to not suck and his job is secure. He'd be crazy to want to go elsewhere and risk having a chance at being fired.

Best coach in school history and 2nd best coach in the conference. Keep the man in Starkville.

Interesting take, but one I really can't argue at this point. That's kinda sad. Also, I just realized I spelled his name wrong

I think he's a good coach, but not that great of recruiter. Has to live off developing in state kids...Which works for State.

His hunchback creeps me out and makes him look less intelligent. He needs have it removed.
