I agree with this. If you grow up in the La and have the opportunity to go to college then it makes more sense to go to Tulane or LSU. Same for Alabama with Bama and Auburn and UAB etc.

Nothing at all wrong with that, but I seriously doubt many on here meet that description.
Probably true. I had to leave state to pursue my degree, but I didn't give up my fandom. I wish I could have attended school in my home state, but I had better educational opportunities. At least I went out of conference and to a lower division.

Agreed. I don't think you should begrudge someone for being an LSU fan because they chose to go to Tulane.
I think the only allowable in-conference defection for education is Vanderbilt in the SEC.

The only thing worse than Updyke-type sidewalks are the people who believe attending some middle of the road mega state university with a football team makes you any better than the people who went elsewhere for college.
Of all the ridiculous things to base your sense of superiority on, that has to be one of the most pathetic.

If you grow up in Tuscaloosa and have the opportunity to go to Duke or an Ivy League school or a DIII/NAIA school that has a top department in your field then you'd be stupid to go to Alabama just to defend your fandom.
I never get upset when we lose a recruit to Stanford or an Ivy League school. I'd jump on that opportunity as well.

I don't feel superior, but I know for the most part, I care much more about the university than most people who never attended it. There's the general difference between sidewalk fans and alums. As an alum, I'm bound to the town and campus in a way that a football fan won't ever be, and so sometimes our priorities and opinions reflect that.
That said, I love all of our sidewalk fans. The more the merrier. Just learn the fight song and sing it correctly.

growing up in GA, I have to say UGA
all the dumbasses from my HS that didn't go to college or went to shitty schools were UGA fans....unbearable
This.
But I actually prefer the sidewalk fans for UGA more than actual students.
All the students there are pompous hipsters who think they are better than the world. I have never seen a more liberal "southern college" in my life.

The entire state of FL is pretty bad, pro sports included.

As I said, it depends on the circumstances. I grew up in Fayetteville, my high school shared a campus with the U of A, worked in town at places that depended on the university, played sports in all the U of A stadiums/arenas/facilities, and even took a summer class there. However, they didn't have a vast number of degree sand some of us had to leave state to pursue our education. I think we appreciate the town, the university, and what the university has done for the town/state as much as people who graduated from there.

I think it's perfectly fine to leave state if you have an opportunity to go to an Ivy League school or some other prestigious university while remaining a big fan of your home state school. There are times where your home state school doesn't offer degrees in something like Aerospace Engineering or you have the chance to go to Harvard Law or John Hopkins medical school.
Dude....
1) Harvard Law and John Hopkins medical school are graduate schools. You could still go to the state school you're a fan of for undergrad. People's fan allegiances 99% of the time belong to their undergrad alma mater - that's just the way it works.
2) The kind of people we're talking about as being trashy bandwagon sidewalk fans are not the type of folks who had to give up their dream of attending Big State U because they got accepted to MIT. They're the type that flunked out of the community college in their suburb.

Well, you grew up in Fayetteville, so that's different.

The answer to this question is LSU and it isn't really close imo. Everyone in Louisiana pulls for them even if you attended another university in this state. More than half of ULL's fans are LSU fans. Same goes for the all other universities in this state.

Sidewalk Alum: Noun
(i) These fans have never set foot in a college classroom, nor have many ever been to a game. These are the fans that spend their waking hours on chat forums of their rival schools spewing hatred. They hate your team more than they love their own.
(ii) A rabid fan of The University of Alabama.
1. Bama
2. LSU - "Half the fans in Tiger stadium can't even spell LSU." - James Carville

I don't begrudge people who went to Hendrix or UCA in Arkansas that still pull for the Razorbacks. In fact, I think it's ok to pull for LSU in major football while being a ULL or ULM season ticket holder and cheering for them in their conference and hopeful bowl game.

I didn't get into UF, but my current school doesn't have a football team.

I would disagree here. It makes sense if you go to a FBS school, but I went to a school that had virtually no sports programs. Everyone there (and we had students from all over the country), was a fan of other sports teams.
And yes, I wore my Hog gear proudly!
