What happened to the mighty and dominant SEC?
For the SEC, coaching selection (Kelly, Sunbelt Billy, Freeze, Stoops), play in the trenches, player development and evaluation precision slipped on many fronts. The Big Ten, ant least in the case of Indiana, exploited that gap with fundamentals and better evaluation.
Top to bottom the SEC is still better as a competitive conference, but the top, brand SEC teams aren’t as good at the moment.

Portal kills depth. These post covid teams are not as deep as pre-Covid and as a result, not as good.

I think the thing that you missed here is that the Big 10 and the PAC were tied at the hip by the Rose Bowl for so long. They had a love fest with each other for half a century... So when it came time for the BIG to expand to non contiguous states... it was pretty seamless to take in the PAC teams.
