For music, I blame Napster and the internet in general. Advances in computing also, where anyone could have their own recording studio on their computer. Everything got diluted really fast. It used to be a band would have to actually impress people live, draw crowds, maybe even make a little money, before things like studio recordings and distro were a thought. Nowadays, and going back many years since tech revolution, anyone with a laptop is now a producer. There's no gateway anymore. It's diluted now, when good music used to be distilled.
