We always seem to compete with the draft for players.
And that was a competition that we always lost prior to NIL.

I don't know enough if things have changed. But a quality manager goes a long way

Draft is still going to take a lot of top end guys, especially out of GA (culture of travel ball in this state is such that you go pro if you get a favorable call). But whereas Perno was constantly signing the best in the state only to see them go pro, Stricklin had a habit of pissing off the best players, their coaches, or their families and was reduced to having to find guys from outside the metro area who just loved UGA or that he could develop into serviceable players (which is a helluva way to run a railroad when the best talent in state is still going to Vandy, MSU, LSU, USC, etc).

Case in point: Drew Burress out of Houston County should be at UGA right now but Stricklin didn’t recruit a kid who grew up loving UGA because of his size and now he’s likely going to be one of the best players in the country for 2 more years (hopefully he has good sense to get away from Tech with Hall still there)

Seems like Wes has a much better sense for identifying talent in the portal and out of HS and the current team legit loves the guy. He also has the good sense to let his assistants be the experts in their field (like Coggin and the offense) whereas Stricklin 1. Stuck with a hitting coach who wasn’t good his entire tenure and 2. Often left pitchers on the mound way too long (despite Kenny demonstrating that he was a good pitching coach)
