Our only other major hit is the loss of LB Jamar Chaney and we return 2/3 there.

Pretty sure UGA lost a lot of starters on defense as well. You are likely gonna be starting a freshman QB in the SEC and breaking in a new defensive scheme that you haven't been recruiting players for. No idea why you are so confident that you will lose 3 games at worst.

only one of those RBs was on the active roster last year and that was Robert Elliot who had 44 rushes for 221 yards and a TD. i'm including JUCO RB in Vick Ballard, and two redshirt freshmen in LaDarius Perkins and Montrell Connor.

I hate to disagree with you Adam, but Saturday doesn't mean shite. Richt has already said we're not going to see a whole lot out of the defense, and also keep in mind it's only been 2 months of installing a brand new system with completely new positions/terminology. How we look Saturday will in no way determine how we'll look 6 months from now against Arkansas. Whether we look like the steel curtain or we look like swiss cheese, it doesn't matter one iota.

I don't know how many times this has to be addressed, but why must a team "recruit" to fill out our defense because it's a new scheme? Does it not occur to you that we have people who were playing DE who are perfectly suited to be absolute monsters at OLB in this scheme? We have plenty of talent to make this D work I promise you. The only thing we need to work on is the execution. The talent is there.

as we are running a new defense It isn't nearly as big a deal.

I'm thinking state should be able to power over teams with weak defensive fronts. That O-line is nasty and so is Relf. Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn are all teams that could have some major problems containing Relf and Co.

well that's true. However, i think it will give us a small impression. As of now we have no clue so any little bit is good.

We didn't have your kind of talent in 2007, but we had a lot of guys playing out of position. A 4-3 DT isn't always going to be able to play DE in a 3-4. A 4-3 DE certainly might not be able to play Jack in a 3-4. You need a big 320-330lb NT who can anchor the middle. Does UGA have that? Do you have a couple of 240-250lb guys to plug in at Mike and Will LB? You need big linebackers and D-linemen to make a 3-4 really work. From what I have seen UGA has favored smaller/faster defensive players under Richt. You absolutely have to recruit players to fit your scheme on both offense and defense. Just because a guy is a talented athlete doesn't mean he can go to a new position and be as effective as he was at the old one.

RB is the easiest position in football to transition to, especially considering we're not playing any true freshmen.

luckily for us we have a few

our starting dt weighs 295.

UGA is likely a 7-8 win team this year IMO.

true. I just think it will be hard to replace Dixon's production.

dont they still have Ducre?

with one single back? sure it will be hard. but that's not the situation. Like UF, Mullen will be employing a back by committee approach(+Relf) and along with improved passing there should be no drop off in the offense's production. if anything there will only be improvement.

The biggest misconception on the planet about the 3-4. To answer your question, yes we do have a behemoth in Kwame Geathers who is 6'5", 330 that we can plug in at nose. However, when Grantham was running the Cowboys' D-line he turned 290 pound Jay Ratliff into a Pro Bowler. Our current starter is 290 pound Deangelo Tyson, who played DT in the 4-3 and was a top 2 DT in the nation in high school a few years ago.
I also feel like we have some prototypical, textbook OLBs that are converted DEs from last year in Justin Houston and Cornelius Washington. They were fine 4-3 DEs, but these guys are tailor-made 3-4 OLBs. Sure we may have some guys uncomfortable in the new positions and a little out of sorts. But we've got the guys, I'm confident of that.
