Terrible decision. You don't let anyone swing away in that situation.
Oh I know it was a bad move, never said I agreed with it.

LSU is one of those teams that can come back from the losers bracket b/c of the pitching depth & the bats are usually pretty good. Heck we pulled it off in 2010.
Before that, the last time it happened is 1998.
It's possible, but unlikely. UNC got blown out and LSU choked away a close one.
IF we were to assume LSU's path, I expect NCST to handle UCLA Tuesday night. That means LSU would face UCLA again, followed by NCST twice. I don't know enough about NCST to suggest how that game would pan out. It would be their #3 starter against our #4/bullpen.

Oregon State came back from the losers bracket in 2006

Mainieri Comments:
Mainieri's Other Comments
It's just Mainieri's style, with pretty sound reasoning. I know why LSU fans wouldn't want to gamble in that situation, but I see where he's coming from.
quote:
We were going to bunt the two times. All year I would have had Raph hit in that situation, and he's had a propensity to hit into double plays, I think as people who follow our program know. And I was going to go ahead and bunt. I just figured in that situation he hadn't been really swinging the bat that great the whole game. We gave him the bunt sign for two pitches. And then once the count got 2-0, I knew Mason was a very heady base runner and he wouldn't get picked off, and I figured Berg, who throws a lot of strikes, was going to have to lay one in there, assuming he was going to bunt again. And so we decided to take a gamble there and go with the hit and run, and Raph hit it hard. It was just really bad luck. He hit it so hard, they were able to get the force out at second before Mason could get there and turned the double play. I was hoping that we could end up with a big inning out of it. If the ball goes down the line for a double, we're in business, maybe have a chance to win the game right there against a tough reliever. The other thought I had was once the count got 2-0, we were going into the bottom half of our order, and I just thought that it was worth the risk, worth the gamble and see if we could make something happen, get a runner to third base with less than two outs. Didn't work out for us.

Who's pitching for LSU tomorrow? My Twins drafted Ryan Eades in the 2nd round. Any chance he'll be on the mound? How good is he and what's he like as a pitcher?

LSU won't be playing till Tuesday, right now I'm assuming Eades will be on the bump for when they play against UNC.
He's a pretty good pitcher however the past 5-6 starts he's struggled with his command, getting behind hitters & leaving pitches up.
Overall he's a 3 pitch guy in his FB, Change, & 12-6 Curve when he's locating & hitting his spot he's worth the 2nd round pick.

Thanks, will be rooting for him on Tuesday.

I'd much prefer us to pitch Glenn - he's a lefty (against a heavy lefty lineup in NC) and has really been better than Eades the last half of the season. The problem is, he was suspended for the regional and wasn't needed in the super, so he hasn't pitched in 3 weeks. I doubt Mainieri will take a chance on him being rusty, and will likely pitch Eades.
Which doesn't make sense to me by the way - Glenn is going to have to pitch at some point this week if we stay alive, so why not pitch him against the lefty lineup?

Whew, glad I was wrong
No point in saving him, if he's rusty, he's rusty. Not going to get out of the loser's bracket without him.

I'd just be worried about how much rust plays a factor, had a pretty good impact on Koop in Regionals/Supers.
And if I remember right he struggled on the road this year?
