Didn't see this posted anywhere thus far.
Athlon 2016 Preseason top 25 SEC players (plus 30 honorable mentions or so...)

I'm sure there will be some bitching about the rankings and where players fall, but overall, seemed like a "not entirely shite" list. Anyone feel like someone from their team was notably left off? The last 5 in could probably have been interchanged with a few of the honorable mentions, but what say the rant?

ETA: For the love of god, use your noodles and ditch the "My teams player isn't on the list, so it's clearly shite..." It's meant to drive discussion. Make a case for both who you think deserves to be *in* and who is *out* and WHY?... At least try and have a reasonable discourse rather than tripping over your dicks to try and measure them.

quote:

25. Tim Williams, LB, Alabama
24. Marquis Haynes, DE, Ole Miss
23. Tre’Davious White, CB, LSU
22. Davon Godchaux, DT, LSU
21. Tony Conner, S, Ole Miss
20. O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
19. Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss
18. Eddie Jackson, S, Alabama
17. Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama
16. Arden Key, DE, LSU
15. Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
14. Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee
13. Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt
12. Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
11. Jalen Hurd, RB, Tennessee
10. Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
9. Jamal Adams, S, LSU
8. Jalen Tabor, CB, Florida
7. Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss
6. Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama
5. Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
4. Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama
3. Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama
2. Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
1. Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU

*Note* - There is but one UGA player in this and until he comes back healthy wouldn't even begin to argue his spot on the list, so I've got no "dawg in this fight", just curious what the consensus would be.

Stacked list. All of them should get drafted or get a shot at the NFL.

Alabama with 8 players listed is just nasty

Garrett's chronically overrated

Only ranked above Barnett because he was a 5 star out of HS and Barnett wasn't.

No JRM is pure TRASH. Other than that no major complaints.

Crazy that 19 of 25 are from the west though.

How is Beckwith not in the top 15?

He's in the "15 to watch"... Who gets kicked out of the top 25 to make room though?

Charles Harris is not one of the top 25 players in the SEC? lulz

Could also argue Terry Beckner JR, Harold Brantley or Micheal Scherer.

I'm pretty pleased with LSU getting 5 players on the list. I just don't think they got the correct 5. Kendell Beckwith should be there as well Ethan Pocic. To make it fair I'd take off Godchaux, and I'm not quite ready to put Arden Key on this list, especially not at 16.

Also in the 15 to watch, but what is the case for having him higher? He would not have been one I considered to crack the top 25, though admittedly I can't say I followed LSU as closely this year as I have in years passed. The stat line from last year doesn't really jump out at me (nor does Reuben Foster's but I think there is an element of expecting him to step up into Ragland's shoes).

He had a better year statistically than either of Bama's LB's listed fwiw. OJ Howard also has only one game in his career that merits putting him on this list. (I'm not specifically trying to hate on Bama, just a few of the players I think he could replace happen to be on their team.)

2 of those listed in the 15 to watch defensively... Who do you eliminate to make space? It's one thing to balk that "your guy" isn't on the list, but if you are objective about it, who gets shifted out to make room, and why?

No Jalen Reeves-Mabin. No Cam Sutton.

List is bogus.

That one jumped out as a bit of a reach to me as well, ranking based on potential, but he's got a shite load of it, so hard to argue.

2nd person to mention Beckwith... what is it about him that you guys feel stands out? Nothing from the clips I saw or the stat line really seemed "top 25" to me, where I'd say Godchaux and Key really seem to show more promise and/or "wow" factor.

As far as Pocic, I thought the party line from LSU was that last years struggles against Alabama were due to poor O-line play. (I keed, I keed) Don't see him as a top 25 guy, but solid for sure. I think in general, O-linemen have to work a lot harder to get recognition on lists like these for better or worse.

1/3rd of the list are Alabama players, sounds about right.

Blake Barnett and Bo Starborough will be on that list before the season's over.

I agree with Fibonacci. That's why I replaced two LSU players with two other LSU players that I thought were more deserving.

OJ Howard

He was probably my "first out" on the top 25. Not that I don't think he's a top 25 talent, but simply that Alabama hasn't shown any commitment to using his talents other than in the title run.

As far as the "statistically better", I think when you account for Ragland's playing time and those tackles going elsewhere, that's where the love for the Bama LBs comes in. While JRM's stat line was technically stronger than Ragland's as well, I don't feel like he was as impactful. Athlon doing a bit of predicting that a Saban defense will produce another killer LB, but I think that's a pretty strong case you make there.

not quite sure what clips you're watching.

he was second in tackles for LSU and was a semifinalist for the Butkus. He was projected to go in the 2nd round before he decided to stay.

Which was good for 13th in the SEC last season. Good backer for sure, but don't see him as being better than some of the others listed. Could probably make a case that Tim WIlliams doesn't belong at 25 (but dammit he can get after the QB), but likely wouldn't be Beckwith I'd be bringing in. The other LSU poster made a good compromise there though rotating him in the place of some other LSU players... could see the case for that for sure.
