It is very strange. I thinks its because Alabama fans, more than most, have their personal self worth tied up into the success of the football program they follow.
The psychology of sports fandom is fascinating in general. And Alabama fans are the epitome of it all.

You know why? Because they really don't win shite. It's the football program that does. 99.99% of posters here have no direct involvement.
I've said it before but what merit do you have for drinking beer and watching the games? Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, be happy about it but when people say "I'm proud" of something they have nothing to do with.... it's absurd.
