Most of the top 20 aren't even close to winning a title.
Winning 10 games does not mean you are close. It only matters how you compare to the top 5 recruiters, and there is a huge gap between the top recruiters and the rest of the planet.

Clemson was pretty much top 20 at best in crootin until the last couple years. A program like A&M had a much more talented roster than them on paper

And guess what, now that they are recruiting on the top end, now they are winning titles
They already had history and money built into the program to help them, they just needed someone to access it.

I have more respect for Hog fans than Bama fans. It's easy to be a Bama fan. No disrespect meant to Bama fans.

I'm saying that nobody outside of the top-20 has a chance for the most part.
And recruiting isn't everything. You still have to coach them and develop them. Just look at the jackass we are paying $7 mil a year too. He's recruiting pretty well, but might as well not be.

Nick Saban could not win a national championship at Mississippi State.
Yet he won one at LSU......which by all accounts according to the college football experts of the rant... simply wasn't capable of winning at that level.
Bull shite. Saban could absolutely win a Natty a Moo State.

No, but it is the sole indicator of who can win a title

Saban would have won a title if he had stayed at Michigan State. And speaking of, look at what has happened to their program since he left. It has remained at a high level of competition ever since. They were nothing before he got there.
Same with LSU really. Saban would win a title wherever he went. This thread's premise is bogus.

I didn't realize that LSU was a program that lacked money, history and had to split recruits with other better schools who routine gobble them up.

Check back in 10 years when no one in the SEC has sniffed one except for Bama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, A&M and Tennessee.

I also take issue with saying South Carolina can't win one, or that the odds are "exceedingly low." Hell, it wasn't too long ago Spurrier coached them to three straight 11 win seasons.

Not true. You need to be in the top-20 in recruiting on a regular basis. And most of the top-20 isn't loaded with 5 stars. And you need to be in the top-20 to compete in the SEC.
Top 20 plus a pro qb. Top 5 if qb is meh.

[quote]Nick Saban could not win a national championship at Mississippi State. The end.
He certainly knew he would never have a chance at Michigan State.
I agree, in modern CFB, there are only a handful of programs capable of reaching the final four.

South Carolina was nowhere near winning a title in those years

I'll go ahead and take issue with the last two as well.
Mizzou played for the title their first two years in the league. And Kentucky may have a shot to play for one this year, imo.

I guess I should clarify that I'm referring to National Championships, but I thought that was a given since an SEC title has no value

More like Top 10. Clay Travis does research on this every year and this is why Jimmy's and Joe's matter more than X's and O's. Going back to 1995 or so, there has only been one team to win a national championship without at least one Top 10 recruiting class on its roster. That team was 2000 Oklahoma. Using that stat as a metric, there are presently only 12 teams in major college football capable of winning it all this year.

The person I was quoting was talking SEC titles I think.
But I would also note that if you can win an SEC Title you can win a National Title. This is the best conference in America.

What about 2016 Clemson? I know they had some success in the 1980s, but to most people Who aren't old enough to remember that they might as well have been North Carolina State before then

But, they didn't. That's my point. Knocking on the door is not the same as walking through it. That's a huge leap that South Carolina could not make despite having one of the best coaches in history.
Why couldn't they do it? Recruiting wasn't good enough. Period.
