That Mississippi State 2014 team was the luckiest number 1 ranking of all time. They began with a a non-conference of Southern Miss, UAB and South Alabama then a way overrated #8 LSU who finished 8-5, then #6 A&M who finished 8-5 with a losing SEC record, then #2 Auburn who finished 8-5, then you beat a 5-7 Kentucky team, an Arky team that went 2-6 in conference and then Tennessee Martin to receive the #1 ranking that completes the weakest non-con schedule I’ve ever seen...to lose to Bama the next week (no shame there).
Just the facts.
They actually reached #1 after the LSU-A&M-Auburn stretch. They beat three top 10 teams in three weeks. They stayed #1 until the Alabama game. They didn't receive it after beating UTM. They were #1 for 5 weeks.
At the time, it was pretty impressive. LSU, A&M and Auburn were all undefeated and State handed them their first loss. It was the first time in AP poll history that a team had beaten three top 10s in three weeks. I'm not sure you could have not had them #1 at the time.
But you are right that all of those teams ended up being 8-5.

Arkansas is the only SEC West team that has not been ranked in the Top 24 of the playoff poll.
