Actually, Alabama has one of the better SEC baseball traditions. It's a shame there aren't more well rounded sports fans on The Capstone to enjoy it.

wow could not agree more
these morons truly believe the SEC is now theirs and everyone will basically bow down to them again. That isn't how the SEC works now.
I see AU fading and the west coming to LSU-Bama most years like it has with us and AU. With the occasional surprise team here and there. I respect where their program is headed, but if they think that another decade of dominance is coming they'll be disappointed.

I, our fans, team, and coaches made that mistake this year.

Hey Bammers, he's right. See Spurrier at UF. Imagine Spurrier at UF with no handcuffs, a la Bear at Bammer. The Gators would have been FILTHY! Bammer would be a distant second fiddle.

I saw Scoop talking to another Bama fan in the RR thread about this. He basically said that Alabama would exceed expectations and go (at worst) 10-2 next season in a "rebuilding year" because of some mythic "We are Alabama" effect that presupposes that the Tide will win more games than other programs in similar situations simply because "We are Alabama"
This is something I have seen and heard a lot of from some Bama fans and I'm here to set the record straight.
Simply "being Alabama" doesn't mean jack shite. You had a huge as frick run in the 60's and 70's not because you're Alabama, but because you had the best coach of all time operating in a scholarship free environment with little NCAA regulation enforcement.
There is nothing inherently better about Alabama as compared to Florida, LSU or Georgia. There might be a SLIGHT advantage over Tennessee because the Vols don't have your natural recruiting base, and another small advantage over Auburn because you're school is named after the state and their's isn't.
However, your fanbase, facility quality, AD and football budget and any other tool we can use to compare programs is basically the same as the 3 schools I mentioned (Actually, Florida is probably #1 with LSU, UGA, and Bama bunched up right behind.)
You have been EXTREMELY lucky to be blessed with the coaching talent that you've had, which is the only thing that seperates you from the other big boys. Bear Bryant would have won 6 National Titles at LSU, too.
it comes from a lack of intelligence. most of the bama fans that posted in this thread don't even really understand what you're trying to say. they just revert to arguing their historical superiority

I'm sorry for all the dumbasses. There is nothing inherently great about any program.

Hey now I'm a big fan of Milton Friedman, I want no part in this nanny state.
I'm not daft enough to think that Alabama is inherently great. We are who we are because of quite possibly the best luck in choosing coaches pre-97 sans Whitworth.

hard work... attitude... has alot more to do with it than luck. No doubt we've had good coaches. Not only because of luck, but because it is Alabama. And again, I'll grant not so much the last decade. It's been a debacle, but it's turning back around.
Posted on 12/23/08 at 12:42 am to Alahunter
I meant that we have been graced with better coaches than any other program. I don't know how that's anything but luck.
Posted on 12/23/08 at 12:44 am to ShreveportBama
I'll grant there is some luck. Just like Bama having the reputation that it does, brings in talent and helps to elevate coaches also. There is more than luck in it. And the overall program has something to do with it. Is all I'm saying.

I'm not saying it's all luck.
You can take away Wade, Thomas and Bryant and I'm sure Alabama would have still been as good as any other major SEC program.
I'm just saying you've been very fortunate to have so many great coaches in your history, and that's the biggest reason why you've had the crazy success you've had, not because "We're Alabama". That's all.

also, I will grant that a post-Bryant Alabama has sort of "cemented" itself in the minds of those who follow college programs as one of those "it schools" that makes it somewhat easier for a coach to be successful than it otherwise would be, but again that's just a product of having the best ever coach at your school, which is something you were very fortunate to have.
