Your problem, thunderbird, is that you're looking at all of these QBs in a vacuum. You can't do that. There are other factors to consider when determining if you "feel good" about your QB. It's not just QBR or whatever metric you want to look at. You also have to consider expectations of the program, overall talent of the QB, room for improvement with experience, etc.
You can say I'm being illogical, but really I think you're being simple-minded.

Why the downvotes? No one likes diplomacy anymore?

IMO LSU has to be considered amongst the teams expecting improvement next season on offense, and Etling should be grouped with teams to feel happy about a returning QB.
Etling wasn't a world beater in 2016, no one is arguing that. But he is a good game manager type, and that's really all LSU needs to be successful. Sure they'd be very scary with a truly great QB, but teams have proven a strong defense, strong running game, and careful QB play can win games.

Dont have to look any further than Canada taking Peterman to new heights this year as a 5th year senior from his 4th year junior season
Nathan Peterman was a talented QB who had a pretty good Junior season.
Junior
61.5% completion, 2,287 yards, 7.3 YPA, 20 TD/8 INT, 138.6 QB Rating (#48th nationally)
Senior
59.7% completion, 2,602 yards, 9.0 YPA, 26 TD/6 INT, 161.2 QB Rating (#8 nationally)
He certainly got better, but he was a pretty decent QB in 2015, and he has a pretty decent skillset (and very good athleticism).
I think Etling is what he is. Canada can put him in position to game manage well (ala McElroy), but he's a pretty limited guy running and throwing the ball down the field.
