I wasn't going to come back to this thread.
But I made the mistake of doing so, at which point I read the following words:
quote:

some people think dark and upsetting stuff is funny

I was going to ignore it.
But I couldn't.
Hit too close to home.

This is Scott.

Scott was a sophomore ocean engineering major.

On his portal at the campus Bonfire Memorial are the following words, penned by Scott. Fittingly, the first word on Scott’s memorial portal is 'God,' evoking his strong Christian faith. That’s followed by a passage of praise that he penned at seventh-grade church camp:
quote:

God
Heart to God, Hand to Man
U.M. Army – Livingston, Mont Belvieu, Huntsville, San Marcos
On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country.
I walked to the altar. I was alone when I began to pray. I prayed to the Lord to help me through times of temptation so I wouldn’t give in. I felt a feeling of warmth and security surround me and flow through me. At that moment, I knew for sure I would never be alone. When I opened my eyes I was surrounded by others and felt assured and strong. Afterward, I never felt weak, hopeless or alone again. I also believe I never will.
- Scott West, 7th Grade Church Camp

Next come a few loving words from his sister, Kristin:
quote:

“Thanks for teaching me the true meaning of Aggie Spirit and what life is about. I love you. We will go out again soon,” wrote Kristin, who visited Scott at A&M days before the collapse and later would become an Aggie herself.

I thought it was important for you to know that what you find "funny" is a living hell for the Wests. They've been through unspeakable pain, yet they've handled it with a grace I can't ever begin to understand.
quote:

It’s the everyday joys Scott shared with his family that now bring smiles.

The year he died, the sophomore Corps of Cadets member grew quite strong, thanks to a dedicated workout routine. It made his loving embraces even tighter.

“He’d come up behind you and give you what he called his mommy hug or daddy hug and pick you up off your feet,” Richard said. “We had to tell him he couldn’t do that to his grandparents.”

Scott’s standard salutation when phoning home to Bellaire still makes his dad chuckle.

“He used to call,” Richard said, taking on an affectionate monotone, “and say, ‘Hi, Dad, it’s me, Scott.’ Every time. I’d say, ‘Scott, I know who’s on the phone.’”

Richard and Janiece have parted with some of the physical possessions linking them to their son, such as his beloved Volkswagen. They sold the car to a boy in Scott’s Scout troop who restored it and painted it purple.

The memorabilia, meanwhile, is securely stowed away at home. Among those special items is a pair of senior Corps boots that someone gave the Wests at Scott’s funeral.

But the quiet young man with a dry sense of humor lives on in countless other ways besides the physical items he left behind.

“You think of him when you see a Volkswagen go down the street. You think of him when you go by the high school, when you run into one of his friends,” Richard said. “When your life is so intertwined with someone, their spirit is left lingering on a thousand different things day to day.

“You hear people say they think of someone every day. ... It really is true.”

He was a really great kid.
As were 11 others.
It's a joke to you, but it isn't to me.

I feel like A&M fans take the phrase "cross divisional rival" a little bit too literally.

Its just the team they stick you with. Kind of like Vandy/Ole Miss or State/Kentucky. Its not really special. Honest.

Texas would actually be the second largest OPEC producer. We passed Iraq when all that unrest started back up. Glad we don't have to rely on those fricks

Hate all you want, but at the end of the day, we're Texan......and you're not.

Oh, and you want to stop a public gathering protected by freedom of speech, yet were the "radical" ones? You seem confused. Join a cult brotha, because were filling our jizz jars at the state courthouse wether you like it or not.

Thanks for sharing, SCRooster. Really does shed some light on the topic. Now I understand why some folks were using such heavy words when discussing the Statehouse grounds. The location of yell practice is not meant to be a serious insult. I'm sure they will work something out.
