so the difference between Ole Miss and most of the schools who have more money is due primarily to the school not having built a stadium that if of appropriate size for an SEC program

So you think if we expand to a 100k seat stadium, all those tickets are going to sell? You can't use the "If you build it, they will come" argument here.

"We don't fill a 40,000-seat stadium now, so what sense does it make to expand it to 60,000?"

Remember hearing that a few years ago?

Well, last year, that 60,000-seat stadium nearly sold out just through season-ticket sales.

You build a bigger stadium and you are making a statement about your expectations and what you consider your status to be. Which effects recruiting. It is all about perception and attitudes.

Aren't we in the process of expanding the stadium? I could have sworn we were....

If you're going to continue to act like a pompous arse, the least you could do is use the correct word.

As you must already know, there are plans for expansion, but in your opinion, what should the seating capacity be?

80,000 would be respectable.

That is big enough to look like a "real" SEC stadium.

The good news is that there is a limit to how big a stadium can be and still provide a quality viewing experience and I think 100K is about at the limit.

So there IS an end in sight to the stadium "arms race", especially with some SEC schools already having attendance problems (even including Alabama)

There is this thing called Nike you need to Google.

Off topic -- I work about a mile from Nike but because of today's Snowpacaplyse I could walk there twice as fast as I could drive there today.

Go on Google Maps and look at how bad the traffic is in Beaverton, Oregon today.

I agree with your point, though. Phil Knight has completely transformed Oregon. Between 1970 and 1985, Oregon and Oregon State had fewer wins than Mississippi State. The Beavers have improved quite a bit under Riley and Erickson but the Ducks are in the stratosphere relative to what they once were.

Oregon also hasn't hired "from outside their program" since the early '90s.

I know we've gone slight off-topic, but I just wanted to drop this here for anyone claiming Nutt could recruit or left anything in the cupboard.

2009 OM Recruiting Class

Nutt signed 37 players that year. 9 of them were 4* or better. Looks GREAT on paper, right?

Any OM fan can go down that list and point 11...ELEVEN...players that ever contributed shite to our program. Only ELEVEN of those players were still around for their senior years. Only TWO of the 4* or better players ever contributed (DT Shack and Bobby Massie).

This trend in Nutt's recruiting only continued. He left this program in shambles.

Now personally, that's why Freeze has gotten a pass on these first two years from me for any shortcomings. He got a pass, and he STILL has gone to two bowls and beaten a top 10 team in his first two years. I'm willing to ride it out and see what he can do with full depth of HIS players.

I didn't say I am ready to fire the guy, just that his on-field performance at the end of the season and his lack of recruiting success over the last few months raises some questions....

If you call an 8 win season and a top 15 recruiting class "shortcomings" then I got nothing for you.

Someone posted a link to that class on RebelGrove this morning and I was just in awe if how shitty Nutt was. I knew it, but to have it pointed out like that really drove it home.

I knew attrition killed his classes but I've never taken the time to actually break it down

According to Phil Knight, there's an interesting tale as to how they sought out Chip Kelly (for OC).

How Dan Mullen helped Chip Kelly land the Oregon OC job

Knight was a huge Chip Kelly fan from the start and made a big push to have Kelly take over when Bellotti was ready to move on. Basically once Phil Knight and Bellotti figured out Crowton (Oregon's OC prior to Kelly) was getting fed plays by Chip Kelly they decided to cut out the middleman and just hire Chip Kelly as OC.

Only pointing this out because it's not like Oregon organically developed Chip Kelly. He was brought in as OC with the intent that he would take over ASAP. Knight was very high on him from day one.

Otherwise, you are correct. Rich Brooks is the last head coach Oregon hired from outside. Oddly enough, he played for Oregon State in the 60s.

I call being able to score only one offensive touchdown in the last two games against two defenses that had given up plenty of points over the course of a season--and losing them because of that--a shortcoming. I sure do, especially when winning those games might have propelled us into a New Year's Day Bowl, a 10-win season, and a Top 10 final ranking.

And I also call striking out with pretty much every single recruiting target over the last two months a shortcoming, as well. Sure do. One that raises serious questions about why his recruiting was so much better last year.

By the way, none of the services now have this class rated in the Top 15--17th on Scout and ESPN, 19th on Rivals, and 16th on 24/7....and to be fair, without Tee Shepherd in the mix (who we all know has no chance of qualifying), the rankings would be lower still.

There was a similar post on Red Cup after Freeze's first year. Its just absurd when you look at Nutt's attrition rate that anyone could win with what was left of the team. frick HDN
