I don't think the playoff is broken so much as it's less effective when a lot of teams haven't completed their schedules. Usually we have all the answers we need if everyone has played 8-10 games, and there's even some conference crossover. This year though, we didn't get that. So you have 4-6 teams fighting for spots 3 and 4 because there are just tons of unanswered questions.

None of these teams would have been remotely considered for the #1 spot in the history of college football. Not in the poll era, not in the BCS era and even now your argument is based around the 4th place spot.

I'ld be fine giving conf. winners auto slots into the playoffs. Easier to rank 5 teams than figuring out the 4 best of 5 conferences.
