In the second half of the annual game between Alabama and Auburn, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado passed over the city of Birmingham, AL as the #3 Auburn Tigers squared off against the #19 Alabama Crimson Tide. Those who were watching on TV could barely see through the rain squall as the two teams continued to battle it out on the gridiron. The system that passed through Birmingham that afternoon eventually went on to spawn an F-3 tornado in the city of Oxford, AL - my hometown - a little later on.

Auburn won the game by a score of 23-20.

And very few people left the stadium. The only thing they did was make the cheerleaders shut down their loudspeakers. Times have changed. Today it would have been a four hour delay.

My parents were at that game. My dad has told me that you could see the clouds rotating as the storm passed over the stadium.

That's nuts. Craziest thing I've attended was LSU/Tennessee in Knoxville in 2017. You could barely see the field and rain was coming into the concourse sideways during halftime. I thought there's no way they're gonna start playing until it calmed down. Then I heard the PA announcer talk about the kickoff that just happened.

Here's the 2nd half kickoff. Tennessee return man never saw the ball

The Ole Miss/Ala game in T'town was the worst I ever sat through, so many people went in the concourse there was nowhere for the other folks to go, just stuck in the stadium. I think an Ole Miss coach got shocked. 1994. I've never been so wet. First weather delay in school history late in 2nd quarter.
