Good deal. Let's continue to burn it down.

We need your legal expertise in the Mathis Jr. thread.

There will have to be some financial compensation to UW. Does the kid pay it, or the suitor do so? People brought up coaches breaking contracts all the time. Yes, they do. And they have to pay a buyout clause to obtain their new coach.
Sounds like there were no defined liquidated damages clause in his "contract." Coaching contracts have those spelled out specifically. If there is no defined liquidated damages he would owe by breaking a contract, then he wouldn't owe anything except what he's already been paid, if he's been paid anything to this point. But there's nothing they can do, under the law, to prevent him from transferring. That part of the deal wouldn't survive summary judgment.

Wisconsin had to deal with this previously.
sure, they absolutely did, and the player in question transferred to Miami and played this year for Miami. The sued Miami for tampering, but they haven't received a judgment to date.

Please explain to me why people keep saying they are signing contracts..... that is not what they are doing. What the players are agreeing to are MOUs or something. to be compensated based on their Name, Image and Likeness not their sports performance?

They're signing contracts, but what is happening is schools/conferences are trying to operate in the grey and get creative with language to try to have pay for play contracts and prevent transfer madness without calling it just that because they know those are unlawful and against NCAA bylaws. What I find odd is the rumors are that Washington was using a "template" circulated around the Big 10 schools. That seems unwise from a legal perspective (and lazy/incompetent for the lawyers involved) given the schools are in a bunch of different states with different laws pertaining to NIL.
