Kind of like this NIL and transfer portal stuff. Coaches hate it, but you can't say that publicly.

Saban has talked about this stuff for years.

quote:

The criticism of players from Herbstreit and Howard is simply wrong. Players are opting out of bowl games to preserve their bodies for potentially lucrative NFL careers. Both Herbstreit and Howard know that football is a dangerous game and the chance to get a second contract in the NFL and set yourself up financially for life is one that outweighs the risk of playing in an exhibition game for many players.

Players opting out of bowl games aren't guaranteed to make anything near the money playing football that Howard and Herbstreit currently do talking about college football on television. Just look at former Michigan tight end Jake Butt, whose football career was derailed by a knee injury in the Orange Bowl.

A player opting out of a bowl game to prep for the draft and a potentially better rookie contract isn't a sign that he doesn't love football. It's simply a different perspective on loving football. If a player didn't love playing football, why would he choose to keep playing the sport after college in the first place?

Howard's comments about the importance of the playoff are especially tone-deaf. His employer is a huge reason why so much emphasis is placed on the playoff. The three College Football Playoff games are anchor programming for ESPN and the network's analysts spend hours and hours talking about the College Football Playoff rankings throughout the season. ESPN makes the playoff the focus of the college football season.

And besides, have you ever heard an analyst on ESPN criticize a millionaire coach's love of the game after he took a new job ahead of a bowl game? Both Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma to USC) and Brian Kelly (Notre Dame to LSU) left their top-10 teams before their bowl games this season for bigger paydays and greener pastures and neither had their dedication to college football criticized on GameDay.

This is why Bowl games are gonna die. Might as well expand now. There is no reason for a prospect to risk anything on an exhibition game

The coaching comparison in these things is dumb. The coaches are paid money, they have signed contracts and they have to fulfill those contracts, one way or the other.

Coaches do not just up and decided to leave their teams. They couldn't. Compensation has to be given for the contract. That is usually in the form of millions of dollars, which the school is then able to use for a replacement.

When a player opts out or transfer, there is no compensation for the school. They money and resources they have spent for that player are simply gone. The only consequences that did exist and offer the schools any protection have been removed.

I dont have a clue where youre getting that from.

Imagine youre from being poor as dirt and you have a decent shot and coming into millions of dollars in 4 months or so. You want to move your mom out of the shitty house and neighborhood shes still stuck in and you grew up in.

You seriously going to say "loyalty" to a teammate trumps your own mother?

I dont know how else to explain it to you people.

They also dont get a cut of the tickets or tv money or anything else until now. So yeah, it is a dumb comparison but not for why you said.

Who are all these players having their careers ruined in bowl games?

This thread got made because they had an example, but he's not hurt his career at all. Possibly enhanced it because people love a guy who does shite right.

Your entire story here is just made up. And with all the NIL money now, not sure how it even applies anymore. I'm pretty sure Corral has made more than enough to buy his momma a decent house if he wanted.

Oh, and he's got that education, semi-famous celeb in the state of Mississippi, etc.

Get that bullshite out of here and get back home to mommy’s basement before midnight.

You could get hurt in a car crash, walking down the sidewalk, or even at a weekly practice… going to tell people to opt out of living their life for potential security?

God I hate OM but Matt is a hell of a player and obviously wanted to be out there. He’s going to be fine but now can’t play in a big game he worked his arse off to be in. I hate to see that for anyone especially for a player wanting to help his team in a big game like the sugar bowl.

The draft hasnt happened yet, so you have no idea if that's true or not.

Bryce Young is getting 7 figures from NIL.

Do you think you need millions to be able to by Mom a house? Funny how your story has gone from needing to get momma a house to needing millions.

Btw, for players with a family, they are allowed to get private housing and the university pay for it, and it's 100% legit and legal.

Probably don't want to be moving Mom into your college pad, but if things are really bad there are options available. Even aside from the NIL, players have access to about $26k a year in funds from things like the above, stipends, grants, etc.

You can also take out an insurance policy.

One player out of thousands and thousands. Orginally I was going to say aside from him.

I never said you needed that much to buy a house. I said that's what you stand to lose. Funny how you're trying to twist that now.

Stay getting mad at kids for opting out. They're still gonna do it and it's the smart thing to do.

This is just absurd.

Yeah let me risk millions so I can be loyal and move my mom into my college apartment.

With the $543,000 of tax-free insurance money equated to about $900,000 that is taxed, that means the Orange Bowl injury cost Butt around $2.8 million.

Yeah it really worked out for him, didn't it?

What happened to your sad story about momma?

If a player is going to make millions in the NFL, they are going to get plenty of money in NIL to get momma a house.

Seems to me you don't give a frick about momma, as I figured. Just using the circumstances of a few to justify the actions of many.

I assume you are talking about Jake Butt, and you are ignoring the fact that he was drafted and the policy only pays out the difference.

Also, I love how having to pay taxes is somehow only applying to the policy, as if that doesn't happen with an NFL contract.

How old are you? Because it seems like you have 0 clue on how things work.

You didn't link an article. You underlined some text because you are apparently new to the internet and don't know how to use bbcode.

It's in another thread. But if you knew how to use the internet you would know you could highlight that text and right click and search Google and it would automagically bring you to that exact article. Amazing!
