#7 Vols hosted #6 Penn State and won, 28-21. Oddly enough while Tennessee had played a game a week earlier. For Penn State this was their season opener. Their season finale in 1971 was against..........Tennessee.

While Tennessee seemed late to the party with lights,Auburn wouldn't install lights at J-H until 1981, Georgia wouldn't install lights at Sanford until 1982, Mississippi State installed lights in 1985 and Ole Miss installed theirs at V-H in 1990 (yes, State and Ole Miss played many night games at Mississippi Memorial in Jackson in the 1960's,1970's and 80's)

Would have thought that ugly chunk of concrete was older. Cold War architecture makes sense for that period, I guess.

And ABC helped pay for them! They so desperately wanted to air the labor day season opener between the past 2 national champions in prime time that they helped foot the bill in exchange for getting the broadcast rights.

Even 40 years later that Clemson-Georgia game was one of the finest,hard-hitting games I've ever seen. Tremendous game and win by Georgia.

This was the first mustard bottle ever thrown under the lights in 1981

Ole Miss and Miss St is one thing. They played most of their games in Jackson. Auburn and Georgia not having lights thru the seventies is mind blowing. November games either kicked off at Noon or were not televised.

Remember it well. To show you how much influence JoePa had he told UT officials that PSU would not play if it was a day game.

Notre Dame opened up the 1982 season with Michigan and used the first "portable" light to be brought in so it could be at night.
I want to say Michigan didn't get lights until 2010??
UGA got lights so ABC could have the Clemson game at night. To us old codgers that remember college football being a saturday afternoon game seeing the stadiums under the lights was surreal.

Was flipping through Youtube the other day and found the 1979 Miami Bama game which was the first time ABC had televised a game from Tuscaloosa. ABC would not do another game in Tuscaloosa until 1986 when Penn St came to Ttown. In an interview Keith Jackson said in all the years of doing Bama games he called exactly ONE in Tuscaloosa and that was the 86 PSU game.

IIRC Herschel didn't start the game because of a broken thumb. UGA blocked a punt and scored and later on walker came in the game but was used as a decoy where Tron Jackson scored but it was called back. Both defenses were outstanding. Homer Jordan for Clemson was one of the first true dual threats and UGA was laying the wood to him.
