Actually, that rumor was debunked by The Plainsman a few years ago. I'll see if I can find the article.
LINK
I just forwarded it onto my wife. She had always told me that story

Harper Lee dropped out of Alabama's law school only to go on and write the greatest novel of the 20th century a decade later. (At least she claims to have done so).

Yeah, there's a pretty solid backhand at Auburn in that, mentioning how one of the "thug POS"s later goes on to play football at AU

The inside is even more bad arse.
It's hard to find good pics of the inside, though. Just awesome work archetecturally.
Being a dry campus wasn't bad, really.

I don't understand the concept of a dry campus. A&M is a soaking wet campus... shite, we serve alcohol in the new cafe/bar in the Memorial Student Center that's being dedicated tomorrow.
You don't have to worry about the cops on campus on gamedays or anyday with regards to drinking.

True. The line between what's campus and what isn't is pretty blurred anyways, for all practical purposes. There are bars that might as well be on campus. All fraternities have designated party houses that are basically on campus, etc. And you can drink low key in the fraternity houses anyways because the house directors don't care.

You don't have to at UK, either. In fact, UK has the most lenient game day drinking policy I've seen.
They did ban those motorized coolers last year, though.

Now that you are in the SEC that might change. I forget what the SEC policies are.

This applys to just about every school in the SEC, cops dont care on gamedays.

SEC policies affect what goes on in the Stadium not on campus. The State of Texas controls whether state campuses are dry or wet, and in Texas they give you the choice, hence A&M and Texas being wet.
The only thing I know you can't do is drink in certain buildings on campus. One being the chapel, and the other being a couple of academic buildings.

If I'm not mistaken Peabody (Psychology Dept.) was used as a hospital during the civil war.

Just looked it up and there is no SEC or NCAA policy regarding alcohol sales in stadiums or campuses. It's a school by school decision
ETA, Although I also found this statement as well
quote:
The Game Management Policy states, "No alcoholic beverages shall be sold ... for public or private consumption anywhere in the facility. Furthermore, the ... consumption of alcoholic beverages in the public areas of the facility shall be prohibited ... These issues shall not apply for private, leased areas in the facility or other areas designated by the SEC."
"[The Game Management Policy] prohibits the sale of alcohol in the public areas of a SEC facility in regular season game and at SEC championships," said Chuck Dunlap, SEC associate director of media relations. "It doesn't apply to neutral site games, away games or bowl games."
."

right and it doesn't matter how many times you explain this to people. They will bet you up and down that the SEC doesn't allow alcohol. Everybody will.

Not an SEC team, but UAB sororties can't have houses due to an old Birmingham law. It basically says that no more than 3 or 4 women, that are not related, can live in a house together or it's considered a brothel. Hence why the sororities meet in dorm rooms.

See my link above, there was a similar myth in auburn as well

I had heard about that myth about Auburn.
A guy I dated in college (at UAB) told me about the UAB sorority house law, and I actually found it interesting enough to confirm it with the President of Alpha Xi Delta. I also found the archaic law it referenced but this was years ago and I'm don't care enough now to look it back up
