Okay, thanks. What constitutes downtown, if that's where I should stay?

Downtown is a real small area. Bounded by I 45 to the west/southwest, US 59 to the east/southeast, and I 10 to the north. Downtown is basically just big office buildings, there isn't much going on besides that except Minute Maid and Toyota Center

Downtown is bordered by US59 to the East, I10 to the north and I45 to the west and south. There are several nice hotels downtown such as Hilton Americas, Hyatt, 4 Seasons, Embassy Suites, Courtyard By Marriott. Taking MetroRail will be the easiest and cheapest way to get to/from the stadium. You get to bypass the parking lot gridlock.

No problem

I wouldn't hang out in downtown on a Saturday or Friday night. It will be pretty boring. I live right across 45 in Midtown and there is much more going on. It's also easy to get to and from the stadium from there with the light rail and you won't have to drive at all

Stay downtown for the hotel. Midtown for the nightlife.

take light rail train to Reliant.

I was pondering the light rail option. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is downtown OK for wandering around in the evening? It looks like I am in walking distance to everything I want to see and do in downtown.

Other than on Main St, it'll be just you and the homeless. If something is going on at Discovery Green, that should be fun. There's usually music and a few outdoor activities. What exactly is it that you want to see or do downtown?

This. Easy cab ride between midtown and downtown. I'm still thinking in the context of living here not staying for a weekend

And as a tourist or a resident, no matter how hungry you get.....just avoid the McDonalds in midtown. That double cheeseburger isn't worth it.

Mostly trying to catch some good eats. My hotel is next door to Discovery Green. Would be nice if something is happening there.

LINK

You're right by MKT Bar, it's good for drinks and apps. Flying Saucer is downtown as well and good if you like craft beer

I would take the McGowen St station from Midtown instead of walking to the Main St one. But midtown bars -> light rail-> Reliant is really the best way. No cab or driving, no parking. You save a ton of money that way and its easy. This is what everyone i know does for texans games and the rodeo

So this is the way to go if I'm staying at the Hilton Americas?

I got a room at the Holiday Inn Express right by the stadium.

I considered staying there but opted for somewhere closer to Midtown.

To go to the game, walk over to either the Bell St Station or Main Street Square Station. Get off at McGowen for the Midtown bars and walk west on McGowen. Though Leon's Lounge right off the Station is a good chill spot with very well made cocktails if you want something more than a single liquor/mixer drink.

If it's not too hot, the first bar you come across is Proof. It's a rooftop bar. It's a little expensive but upscale. The next block is Bar Munich, german beer is the name of the game here. Bagby is where the real concentration of bars happen to be, I enjoy The Dogwood with a mix of patio and indoor. Shot Bar is kind of douchey but if you're dressed right and under 25 it's solid. Midtown Drinkery is ok depending on the crowd. At corner of Brazos and Hadley is Little Woodrows, classic Texas ice house with large patio. 3 or so block north from there are more bars but I'll leave it at this as you're getting further from the train.

This is all great advice. Just go back to the McGowen station and hop back on and head south. The Reliant stop is the second to last one. You will go right by the Rice campus on the light rail which is very nice.

Leave plenty of time to get to the stadium via the light rail if you want to make it for kickoff. There's several stops between McGowen and the Stadium and you have to walk through the tailgate lots from the station to the stadium.

This! It's a decent walk from the train to the stadium. I dealt with this for the Final 4. And Reliant pretty big too so walking up the ramps takes a while if you've got upper tickets. On the train I midtown to the stadium is about 30 minutes.
