Max Lennon destroyed the Clemson football program after he won the battle with Coach Ford. He did a lot for the university and academics, but the fights with Danny Ford seemed to sour him on athletics. When he handed the reigns to Ken Hatfield, who he easily controlled, followed by Tommy West, who was completely out of his element, Clemson football was done.
Things didn't really change until James Barker took over as president.

But hey, you've got Ray Tanner to take care of things. A true visionary in the sports world. The dude can hire women's bb coaches like nobody's business.
