Right, let's just model ourselves after every other SEC school. If we all do the exact same thing, then it leads to only 3 schools being on top every year because it comes down to head to head talent. We'd all be fighting for the exact same type of recruit.

For schools like Arkansas, we have to try something different and pick up guys who fit a different type of offense. There's lot of high flying guys who don't want to go play in ball control offenses who would appreciate the opportunity for something different.

Then we mix in a little better defense than we've had and we can go back to 10 win seasons.

It's what we did with Petrino and it worked.

Agreed. I really prefer an offense oriented guy as my first choice.

Like I said, we tried that for 17 years and had a few cotton bowls and trips to Atlanta to show for it...

I can't tell i the "had a few cotton bowls and trips to Atlanta..." is supposed to be a good thing or not.

Seems we had more success in the short time that we abandoned that mantra.

About like the WV and Baylor coach. Air Raid spread offense and zero defense.

I'm pretty sure you can add aTm to your list.

100+ combined score games do not happen with only one team caring about offense.

Is there evidence suggesting that dude would never play any defense? Or are we going on this game where his team is playing a more talented, high offense, higher division team?

Honest question, I don't follow La Tech.

I just don't judge guys' weaknesses until they're on a more equal level normally. Dude might just need to get to a higher division and put better athletes on the other side of the ball.

But yeah, rarely do you get a big offense and a big defense guy all in one.

Unless you go back to the SWC when we were able to get great talent, seems conference championship and bowls that are now called BCS bowls were more common.

In short we need an excellent coach and the budget for excellent assistants who are equally excellent at recruiting.

I agree that ball control and overwhelming defense works for some, but it doesn't work for everyone. It requires overwhelmingly better talent across the field or you risk being 4-8 every 3 out of 4 seasons with one big one a decade. Basically the way Mississippi State plays and the way we were for the HDN error.

The same is true in warfare. The United States can line up and beat down anyone in the world toe to toe. Israel cannot. Therefore, they employ completely different strategies and it works.

agreed.

I don't want to put $4 million into a head coach and have to lowball assistants.

It bit us in the arse w/ Petrino, we lost Ellis whatshisdick to South Carolina when they doubled his salary to be DC, and BP scrambled to get Willy Robinson.

BP could have taken $300K out of his salary and boosted DC pay. Willy came on the cheap, he was one of the lowest paid DC's in the SEC.

I don't care at this point. This guy's team doesn't quit. And I like that.

That would be one of the most important attributes in my book as well.
