If it weren't for Mustain.........

Gus would still be coaching HS, and Auburn never would have won a NC.

Nutt would still be at Arkansas.

The Wildcat never would have reappeared in college, and damn sure not in the NFL.

Petrino would be who in the frick knows where.

The chain reaction of Mustain's recruitment and transfer to USC caused a ripple effect that changed the landscape of football.

Sounds more like those computer/tv commercials. "We thought of everything."

Yeah it is like the Butterfly Effect. I am very confident that if Mustain had gone to Florida or Texas, Gus would never have come here. Ergo, he doesn't wind up at Auburn with Cam Newton.

And without Mitch, we probably still have Nutt, Ole Miss hires Petrino and goes to their first BCS Bowl.

I'm intrigued by the whole Mustain saga; and I'll probably give this documentary a look, but I didn't really care for the trailer. I mean, that's how we see him occupying his post-football life now? Shooting an assault rifle in the woods somewhere? Don't get me wrong, I go shoot mine, but I'm pretty sure footage of that wouldn't make it into my documentary's trailer.

I get the feeling its going to be more about Mitch talking about his side of what happened in the past than what he is doing right now.

I've never heard him say anything about his time at Arkansas. He's always been polite and no-comment about it all, so it should be interesting.

Why in the world did he transfer to USC?

He should have gone to a school he could for sure start at and he probably could have lit it up.

Bad decision to go to USC and ride the pine. Unless he really just wanted to fade away.

True

Mustain would have perhaps gone to USC as a freshman and still not been a factor.

He was already on "thin ice" when he hired Malzahn. He probably would have hired David Lee and been fired in '06. Glad it worked out like it did. We got Petrino.

He probably should have followed Malzahn to Tulsa. I think that will be answered in the documentary. I'm pretty sure after how things went at Arkansas, he wanted to be as far away from NWA as he could get. Oddly, we have some fans who hate him for some reason. Kind of a for us or against us mentality. Damien Williams doesn't get the same vitriol from those people, which makes me believe a lot of it has to do with high school football grudges, which is silly.

USC is a good education, and he got to live in SoCal for a few years.

I really don't think Nutt would have gotten fired. He was dug in like a leech.

He might have wound up as our AD.

It wasn't until Malzahn left abruptly and Mustain and Williams transferred that people really started getting irate about Nutt.

There was always a faction that disliked Nutt from about 2001 forward when they realized he was full of shite. The majority of our fanbase is casual fans, and it took a lot of that stuff that just didn't add up to make them question Broyles and Nutt.

I really think if Mustain had never come here, that Nutt would still be here.

Good point. However, I think Arkansas would have won only 7-8 games in '06. Nutt would probably have survived this. David Lee (can't see Nutt hiring anyone else at the time) would have been even worse without the "wildcat" and Mustain, who was a very good QB, imo. DMAC, Hillis, and Felix are great, but we might not have ever seen their full potential without Malzahn's influence.

Damn...that's an ugly thought. Do you really think Hootie would have survived '08? I'm not saying he couldn't have spun it. Hootie can definitely spit shine a turd and he had a lot of people admiring the shined turd, i.e. himself, as it was. I really didn't realize how well "dug in" he was until he was gone.

I really think you are underestimating how dug-in he was. He was practically Broyles' right hand.

If it only came down to W-Ls, he'd still be here. There's no doubt in my mind.

The ugly shite is what got him ousted. And I mean ousted, like an Arab dictator. Up until the Mustain/Prewitt stuff came out, most fans bought that he was a cornpone good ole boy, pure as the driven snow. It was all of that reality coming down that really got people pissed off enough to apply heat.

He had the blessing of Frank, and Frank was our version of Joe Pa.

No, I think you're right. After really thinking about it, considering what you stated about the extent at which he was dug in, I have to agree.

I think there was a very good chance of him being hired as AD post '08, had we not cleaned house when we did. White, Broyles, and others might have seen to it. That's really scary.

He never disparaged our program publicly, even after all the shite that went down up here.

Didn't he say some shite in Year of the Dog that pissed Nutt off?

I never read the thing I just thought I remember hearing that.
