That came from an AU professor who wrote a piece on the history and the reasons for the reduced longevity of the trees back in 2007. Do you have reason to believe he was lying?
There was a crackdown on students rolling the trees through much of the 70's and 80's (only supposed to roll lamp posts instead) because they would set them on fire after rolling them. It wasn't until 1989 that organized rolling of the trees became the huge every-game event that it is today.
It's in a .pdf on an auburn.edu domain that was linked in one of the thousands tree threads in this forum. In fact, I'd be willing to bet you posted in that thread. You probably should have clicked the link and read it. It was pretty interesting, honestly.
Not calling bullshite yet, but LINK?

The link is here on TD. You can search for "trees" in the archives if you want, but that's going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It was a .pdf discussing why the trees are dying. If it's really that important to you, I'll try to google it.
I honestly have no reason to lie about this. It has absolutely no bearing on my life.
I understand why NGT is so defensive about it, but that doesn't make it untrue.

I was defensive about it because I thought you were referring to the two times in the past five years or so when they were lit on fire. One time was by a UGA fan and the other time was by a Bama fan. I have no clue as to your claim of AU fans lighting them on fire 30 years ago, as this is the first I've ever heard of it. But the last two times were from our neighbors to the east and west.

Actually has been lit about once a year for quite some time. Always happens on that last home game in November for some reason

You were defnsive about it because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you WANTED it to be true. You NEEDED it to be true. Son, we live in a world with trees, and those trees have to be gaurded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? YOU? Don't make me laugh.

bullshite
It was quite the fad by the fans in the seventies to set the toilet paper on fire.
Here is a link to a publication about the different things that have led to the trees dying.
"Too Late for Toomer's Trees" Alumni AU publication, February 5, 2007
Scott Enebak, plant pathologist or "tree doctor" in the AU school of Forestry and Wildlife Science, who inspects the trees monthly (or at least did in 2007), comments about the problems in this magazine.
Fire (page 27)
quote:
"And fire was a problem. Sometime during the joyous revelry of "rolling toomers," fans discovered fire -- or at least the idea of setting the toilet paper alight -- which became a brief, dangerous fad during the disco era. Sharon Mohney '78 of Covingtn, Va., remembers the Auburn fire chief anouncing that anyone caught setting the paper on fire would be prosecuted. Over the years, occasional flames have damaged the oaks, once turing the Magnolia Avenue tree into what Enebak describes as "a burning bush."
Power washing (page 28)
quote:
In recent years, the university began using power washing to remove the toilet paper, which is faster and more thorough that the manual method. Unfortunately, it also stresses out the trees. "I'm surprised, given the power washing, that the oaks are still here," Enebak says. "It is really hard on the trees."

Not sure if this is the link he was talking about, but this publication put out by the Auburn Alumni, February, 2007, talks about the oaks being burned, the pollution, the power washing, and other things.
