We needed a defensive minded coach to fix our defense and we got arguably the best in the country.

Eh, I think for the most part defensive coaching is overrated.

You give a shitty DC LSU or Bama level players and they will look better than the best DC in the country with Kentucky players. For the last few decades offenses have innovated in all these ways to minimize the need for hard-to-recruit talent on the lines (spread, HUNH, wildcat, etc.), while defenses still basically are as good as the Jimmies and the Joes.

Plus I don't think Boom is some sort of defensive genius. The last two times he has been a DC- at Texas 2010 and Auburn 2015- both of those teams had shitty seasons. The stats on his defenses look good but they couldn't hold people when it counts.

I think the fact that Muschamp is recruiting well is a better indicator of potential success.

Give Lorenzo Ward full reign of Alabama's Defense in a few years their defense would like garbage. And we aren't going to be recruiting A lot of Alabama level players any time soon at South Carolina. We'd have to win something first. We need a coach that is that is going to bring in good fundamentals, tireless recruiting, a good defense scheme, and a good staff around him so that we can seem like we are on the right track to recruits. Offense is going to be in the hands of Roper and Bentley. And I think Bentley is the key. Someone he didn't have in Florida and someone I think Auburn really is missing this year. His son is probably going to be the quarterback here in a couple of years and he will have had some time to develop before he takes the reigns.

Maybe.

A great recruiting team can still have a bad defense, but a shitty recruiting team won't have a great defense except when they have a once-in-a-lifetime coach. Here are the top defenses last year:

1 Boston College
2 Wisconsin
3 Alabama 15
4 Michigan
5 San Diego St.
6 Missouri
7 Georgia
8 Florida
9 Ohio St
10 Clemson

The only one that isn't A. in a shitty conference or B. a football Blue Blood for recruiting is Mizzou.

It is very hard to have a top defense without the stars. Almost impossible.
