If that was the case, Mark Mitchell would be playing basketball at Kentucky.

Hard to argue otherwise.

The issue isn’t the rule or the spirit behind the rule. The issue is the selective application of said rule and the SEC coordinating persecution of a member school for following TROs.

Alex Afari Jr. sought to join a local Kentucky circuit court lawsuit to obtain a temporary restraining order (TRO) allowing him to play this season. A federal appeals court previously stayed a broader preliminary injunction that initially opened the door for class of 2022 athletes.

Head coach Will Stein expressed openness to adding Afari back to the active roster if his eligibility status clears.

Other targeted additions, such as defensive edge Antonio Oberry, were not granted a fifth year.

I mean, sure. I’d be happy to have Afari back.

I’m doubtful given how other rulings have gone though. We already lost one guy due to rulings not going our way (as you’ve stated yourself).

Apparently it’s not since Sankey basically bullied Mark Mitchell into pulling his commitment to Kentucky and his name out of the portal (and back to Mizzou) over the intraconference rule (despite the TRO in Kentucky opening the portal for him and others).

ETA: Jack Pilgrim over on the KSR board confirmed the SEC reached out and told Kentucky they were subject to harsh intraconference rule penalties.

The intraconference rule that wouldn't apply had the players known they had an extra year

Greg Stankey is garbage.

I don’t disagree. I find it funny that 5th year guys who entered the portal before the ruling did so “legally” even though they weren’t eligible for the portal until after the ruling (and the basketball window ended before the ruling).

So Mitchell was apparently supposed to declare for something he didn’t even know he had at the time.
