I have never understood how Sewanee even has people that work there it is so remote. Like where the hell do they live?

It's right off the interstate, and less than a half hour from Chattanooga. There are a lot of nice houses around the domain as well.

You could def commute from Chattanooga if you wanted to, had a professor who did that back in the day. But there are plentiful living options around the domain for fac-staff type ppl, which is what most do. Obv not much in the way of nightlife and culture for the older folks up there, but it's a sick area. For a certain type of academic, it'd be a dream job, especially as hard as those jobs are to come by in academia these days.

Also for like simple trips to the hardware store or Walmart or whatever, towns like Winchester and Monteagle, while shitholes, are much closer, right down the hill from campus.

It is remote, but it's not exactly like living out in the middle of bumfrick Wyoming or something. You're still in civilization.

When you need a car to get to the closest Piggly Wiggly, it is remote.
